We need to innovate on energy, but the pursuit must not be subsidized with taxpayer money.
The innovation IS happening OUTSIDE of govt intervention.
Fracking nat gas boom.
Soon you’ll see vehicle fleets switching over.
It’s about half the equivalent cost of diesel right now, and probably that ratio improves over the next several years.
Throughout the last century, basic R&D has been subsidized by society (or taxpayers if you prefer). I can only dream that I live long enough to see the US convert to a fusion power economy, and give the Hugo Chavezes of the world a big middle finger (in other words it’s a positive strategic and economic development that would unequivocally benefit every American citizen via cheaper power, better energy security and less foreign entanglements, and as such should and does receive taxpayer support).
What should not be supported by taxpayers are particular companies and industries which kickback money to the politicians in charge (Solyndra, LightSquared, etc.) while trying to violate basic laws of physics and/or economics with their offerings.
