Fido says: YES to Meat, NO to Mitt!
I once saw a pickup truck used for carrying a complete team of sled dogs. Each dog had a tube-like compartment with a small door with a window looking out at the road.
Most dogs love cave-like dens. Most dogs also love to look out of windows from a moving vehicle. These sled dogs eagerly jumped into their individual cells, arranged like a honeycomb. It was plain that they had done this before, and were eager for the next ride.
There is nothing at all cruel about carrying a dog in a box where he can lie down and sleep, or watch the world go by. They just need adequate warmth and ventilation, and stops for exercise.
Dogs do not suffer claustrophobia: burrows and caves are natural for the whole dog family. Those dogs riding in cars seem to enjoy the heightened intensity of smells caused by wind blowing across their olfactory membranes. They are happy to travel like this. If they didn’t like such travel, they would probably bite you.
