Two German shepherds await fate after biting intruder

Kelso, WA - Lug and Marley, German shepherds, are quarantined at the Cowlitz County Humane Society after biting a woman who walked into their home while their owner was away.

The dogs have been labeled "potentially dangerous" and it will be up to a judge to determine their fate - live or die.

It is stunning that these dogs have been impounded. The woman who was "attacked", Elizabeth Elder, walked into the dogs' home - knowing that the owner was not there.

Apparently Elder is a friend of the dogs' owner, Ingrid Sacha.

It seems that Elder took the familiarity which friendship offered a step too far when she entered Sacha's home in November, even though her friend was not there.

The dogs bit Elder on the legs, hands and face - enough that she required stitches. Elder believes that the dogs are dangerous and should be destroyed.

I’ve been bitten by dogs twice in my life, both during childhood. The first was my fault, I just didn’t know any better than to stick my face into a strange dog’s face and stare at it, a dachshund. He wasn’t put down.

The second, I was riding my bike, present in hand, to a neighbor boy’s birthday party. Two Dalmatians got out of their fence, charged me, knocked me off my bike and I was bitten several times, requiring medical attention. It wasn’t the first time those dogs had done that sort of thing.

They weren’t put down either, but the were removed to their owner’s horse farm out in the country. There was no uniform requirement to destroy dogs that bite.

I feel sorry for those dogs.

In my observation, people who are bitten seem to have no idea why they were bitten. Yet a person with eyes and ears will see the warning signs easily: Stance, vocalizations, tail, fur. All of those things are speaking to you.

Most times when a dog bites, it is because he is afraid or provoked. I too have been bitten as a boy, but it was my own damn fault.

Were you intruding on someone else’s property when you were bitten?

I expect not.

If you intrude on someone else’s property, expect to be bitten by their dogs.

This woman did not have that. And just because a door is unlocked does not give permission to enter. I would know you were coming and would have arranged to have my dogs kept in a safe place so you would not be harmed......

I’m sorry. I was not aware that you are a personal friend of Ms. Sacha. /s

Which this woman did not have in this case. If the person you are visiting isn’t home, wait outside, come back later or set up a different time to meet.

It’s common sense.

If the two women were friends, perhaps she was coming over to feed them. On the other hand, she could have been a burglar there to steal jewelry and should be charged with a burglary charge.

As long as we are assuming facts not in evidence, why can’t I simply assume she was there to pick up her friend’s car keys?

I suspect criminal activity was on her mind. She’s trying to blame the dogs to take attention off her criminal behavior.

“There was no uniform requirement to destroy dogs that bite”.

Neither here nor there... but makes your point. Our Boston Terrier bit our son when he was about four. We couldn’t understand why since she was a very sweet, loving dog that NEVER showed aggression to anyone or anything. So, I called our vet to discuss the behavior. Our Bosty was chewing on a leather chew at the time. Not known to me at the time... some dogs do display growling/biting behavior when they have this treat. Our vet said she had counseled owners of every type of dog concerning this. So, no more leather chews for her. It was a one time incident and it is more common than thought. She has since NEVER growled or bitten again.

A visit from a friend into an unlocked home does not necessarily constitute an “intrusion”.

Of course it does *if* the homeowner did not give specific permission for a person enter a private residence.

I would *never* ever consider entering a neighbors home, without specific permission or agreement. Never!

I don’t care much for dogs, but both of these deserve a BIG doggie treat and a trip to the doggie day spa.

I discovered another VERY BAD thing about rawhide chew toys with a now deceased lab of mine. Amos, the deceased lab, ate most of one. Then he became a fecal bomb. Never again with a large dog.
