Interesting. That link suggested that the male's hoots are lower than the female's, and not the other way around, as I said. So I had to recheck my sources.

Both whatbird.com and owlpages confirm what I thought: it is the FEMALE hoots that are lower-pitched. But both sexes also vocalize in other ways too, such as grunts.

Thoroughly confused yet? Ha ha!
