A man accused of fatally shooting a police officer and wounding five others during an Ogden drug raid last month says he feared for his life because he thought people were breaking into his home to rob and kill him.
Matthew Stewart told The Salt Lake Tribune (http://bit.ly/zMxrig ) that he never heard the drug strike force members identify themselves or announce they were at his home to serve a search warrant the night of Jan. 4.
Stewart, in an interview Friday at the Weber County Jail, said he was asleep when he heard his alarm clock and then a noise that sounded like glass breaking. A shootout between the suspect and officers followed a short time later.
"Some parts I remember vividly. Other parts it was like I was running on instinct," he said. "When you're convinced that you are getting robbed and most likely killed by a group of armed men, your instincts kick in."

I wish we would end the “no knock” warrant madness once and for all.
I'm not for legalizing pot but a misdemeanor raid is over the top if this is true.
Sounds like a justified shooting to me...
This guy is innocent, his story rings true.
Sadly he is going down because the fellow that assaulted him was a cop.
Live by the sword, die by the sword. They need to stop trying to be Navy Seals and go back to law enforcement.
Did they shoot his dog?
Ron Paul is right about some things.
Probably so. /s
I have been in a similar situation and I got out of it and Mike “Da Beef” Terleki went to the Federal Pen along with his Boss James Trafficant.
None of it had to do with me.
Terleki busted me up pretty good.
The entire incident made me realize the deck is stacked.
The same police department that invaded Matthew Stewart’s home is the same police department that shot a man defending his home with a golf club.

We need more peace officers who refuse to go on these no-knock/forced entry raids, and fewer law enforcement officers who are eager to do so.
Seriously?
Wow.
My condolences....:(
“We need more peace officers who refuse to go on these no-knock/forced entry raids, and fewer law enforcement officers who are eager to do so.”
But it looks like so much fun on TV.
Seriously
It was nothin, just this jerk busting me up out at remote boat launch to show his greenhorn partner that he was large and in charge.
I swear, I feel worse for the rookie sometimes.
That guy was terrified.
I’m truly sorry to hear that. I hope all is well with you now.
It was a long time ago.
I walked away, but I will never forget
Yeah?
So does the reality show “Dogs with Guns” (which doesn’t, but should, exist.)
Just imagine the interviews.
“Most criminals will try to avoid dogs. The few that don’t quickly vacate the premises when they see that Fido is armed and dangerous.”
Insert footage of an armed doberman and we have a new hit series. ;-)
Speaking of armed dobermans, I thought you’d appreciate this.

“They need to stop trying to be Navy Seals and go back to lawenforcement.”
Couldn’t have said it better myself. You hit the nail on the head.
Power can corrupt and it often does.
Our Seals are good men, My Grandfather was the Chief of Police, he was a decent man.
Some people don’t handle power well.
My Grandpop was the sort of guy that had to enforce the law, but he understood if a man couldnt pay the fine lest his family went hungry.
The Cops in this story have no heart. None.
They are drunk on power.
Just...damn.
