'Crate-Gate' Plot Twist: Did Seamus Run Away? (Romney's car roof dog)
The Atlantic Wire ^ | 1/31/2012 | Eric Randall

PolitickerNY has a report out Tuesday that Seamus, the dog Romney famously put on the roof of the car when the family drove to Canada in 1983, may have actually run away once the Romneys reached the Great White North. As any Gail Collins readers will know by now, a 2004 Boston Globe story revealed that Mitt Romney strapped his dog's crate to the roof of the family car, terrifying the pooch in the process. Though it was intended as an illustration of Romney's quirky crisis-management, pet lovers everywhere have let it live on as evidence of candidate's cruelty. PolitckerNY's Hunter Walker cites two anonymous sources who say the Romney sons told reporters off-the-record that Seamus actually ran away once they reached Canada. Mitt Romney has said Seamus lived long past that trip, and that he enjoyed riding on top of the car, by way of deflecting attacks from PETA and other animal advocates. But expect this new development to fuel the arguments of those who think the act was abusive.

Have you forwarded this to all the prevention of cruelty to animals groups?

In a related story, earlier today, Mitt Romney received an endorsment from Michael Vick.

The more Mitt opens his mouth the more I am convinced he is a “operative” of the Obama WH.

"I poop on backstabber Romney
for RomneyCARE, his death panels,
and his endless, media supported, lies."

Romney's bad behavior Exposed by Seamus

"Romney Loses Nomination Over Dog Abuse? -
Romney was traveling that summer with his wife, five sons,
and Seamus to his parent's cottage on Lake Huron.
But hours into the ride, Seamus apparently suffered diarrhea,
which ran down the back window of the car.
David Kravitz wrote on BlueMassGroup, a liberal blog.
"It also strikes me as classic Romney:
it solves a problem efficiently, in a business-like manner,
and with no regard whatsoever for the suffering
that the solution may cause."

"But the details of the event are more than unseemly
- they may, in fact, be illegal.
Massachusetts's animal cruelty laws
specifically prohibit anyone from carrying an animal
"in or upon a vehicle, or otherwise,
in an unnecessarily cruel or inhuman manner
or in a way and manner which might endanger
the animal carried thereon.

"An officer for the Massachusetts Society
for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals responded
to a description of the situation saying
"it's definitely something I'd want to check out."
The officer, Nadia Branca, declined to give
a definitive opinion on whether Romney broke the law
but did note that it's against state law to have a dog
in an open bed of a pick-up truck, and
"if the dog was being carried in a way that endangers it,
that would be illegal."

"Dog on Roof? What Was It Like for Romney's Pooch?
- Scientists Say Dog Likely Experienced Wind-
Whipped, Uncomfortable Trip -
"Before beginning the drive, Mitt Romney put Seamus,
the family's hulking Irish setter, in a dog carrier and
attached it to the station wagon's roof rack.
e'd built a windshield for the carrier, to make
the ride more comfortable for the dog,
".. Jordan Kaplan, the owner of Petaholics,
a dog walking service in New York City,
and a lifelong dog owner and dog lover,
said Romney's actions were uncalled for"

"Romney's dog - This is a distinction Mitt Romney
probably could do without, but he is surely
the first presidential candidate to be attacked
for putting a dog with diarrhea
in a carrier and tying it to the top of a station wagon.
Romney's defense: Seamus liked it.
[like the citizens under Romney's RomneyCARE, etc.?] "

"As the oldest son, Tagg Romney commandeered
the way-back of the wagon, keeping his eyes fixed out the rear window,
where he glimpsed the first sign of trouble.
''Dad!'' he yelled. ''Gross!''
A brown liquid was dripping down the back window,
payback from an Irish setter who'd been riding
on the roof in the wind for hours.
As the rest of the boys joined in the howls of disgust,
Romney coolly pulled off the highway and into a service station.
There, he borrowed a hose, washed down Seamus
and the car, then hopped back onto the highway."

Who could blame Seamus? Romney’s treatment of the dog shows him to be a sociopath.

Animal cruelty issues aside, this incident really shows what an idiot, Mitt is.

The article states that the car was overstuffed with suitcases, so he put the poor dog in the crate, strapped to the roof. Why didn’t he simply strap the luggage to the roof, and let the dog ride in the car, like anyone with an ounce of common sense would have done?

Really? Has it come to this?

What rational person with a vote cares about this, and for all those who might, kindly leave their citizenship rights at the door as you leave the country.

Switzerland awaits. Style over substance is the rule of the day over there.

If someone cares and reads the article its purpose is served. Anything negative on Mitt needs to come out and go viral.

You are suggesting that a rational person shouldn't care about accusations of animal abuse in a presidential candidate?

What candidate do you support?

I’m not hiring a dog walker. I’m hiring a President. Not sure why this is on the radar.

Gingrich.

This was a pretty wicked thing to do, and it took place over 12 hours, and continued even after it had made the dog sick.

Mitt Romney was a wealthy, successful, anti-Reagan business man at the time, what he did to that dog was from pure lack of empathy, of awareness of the suffering of others.

“[The oldest son, Tagg Romney] glimpsed the first sign of trouble. ‘Dad!’ he yelled. ‘Gross!’ A brown liquid was dripping down the back window, payback from an Irish setter who’d been riding on the roof in the wind for hours... Romney coolly pulled off the highway and into a service station. There, he borrowed a hose, washed down Seamus and the car, then hopped back onto the highway. It was a tiny preview of a trait he would grow famous for in business: emotion-free crisis management.”

Abusing animals is a warning sign of psychopathy or sadism. No rational (and sane) person wants to put a psychopath or sadist in the office of president. Now to be fair, I’m not sure that a Romney supporter could be classified as a rational person, but it’s possible that a otherwise irrational person might be swayed by this issue.
