"The Big Broadcast is a Sunday night tradition for families throughout the WAMU listening area. Each week, Big Broadcast host Ed Walker offers listeners priceless recordings of popular radio programs from the '30s, '40s and '50s. Priceless, especially, for a man whose first sentence as a child was, 'Turn the radio on.' "

It looks like WAMU’s website is down again. The old site worked fine for years and now they can’t get their act together. Typical Washington DC endeavor.

- 7:00 p.m. Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar
4/16/61 "The Latrodectus Matter" Matter #736 Bob Readick, no other credits given, Lawson Zerbe ; Writer - Jack Johnstone ; Producer/Director - Bruno Zirato, Jr. ; Harry Branson, Philadelphia Mutual Life and casualty Insurance Company, Walnut Street, Philadelphia, calls Johnny about a policy holder. The life of famous entomologist, Dr. Eustace Royal Pennybank, of Cynwyd, near Philadelphia, is being threatened and Harry wants Johnny on the case. The beneficiaries of the $50,000 policy are his pretty young widowed niece, Clara Benson, and several scientific organizations. Johnny drives out to the Cynwyd residence to watch over Pennybank about the time he was to return after giving a scientific presentation. Dollar sees a dark green compact car pulling away out back and finds the entomologist dead, with two bullets in the chest. He hears approaching footsteps and through the frosted glass the shape of a man. Johnny jumps him, but it is a police officer. Johnny lets up when he sees who it is. However, when Officer Fallon sees the body he jumps Dollar and takes him in to police headquarters. Fallon apologizes when he finds out who Johnny is. A police sergeant gives Johnny some details of the murder. Pennybank had been shot at close range with a .25 Colt. Dollar then goes to the residence of Clara Benson. Clara has an old beat-up car. Johnny wonders where the valuable papers are hidden. Cui bono? Apparently only Clara. Johnny checks used car lots and finds out that Clara had just traded in a green compact car for the beat-up old model. Going back to Pennybank's residence he hears someone working to break into a wall safe. When the safe is opened the person is attacked by many black widow spiders. It is Clara and she is dead within minutes His death is avenged by black widow (Latrodectus) spiders. Arthur Godfrey for The American Cancer Society, CBS Radio Network (Multi-Sponsored) (CBS) (23:5)

His friend Spear attempts to take him back to the Fort. They tussle and Matt Dillon throws them both in jail, despite Kitty's appeal that Spear was not to blame. The next day Dillon releases both of them. However, the two soldiers relate that they anticipate severe punishment from Captain Shaw, Colonel Dobey's temporary replacement, because they were expected to report back to Lieutenant Adams with supplies. Matt says he will intercede on their behalf with Shaw. The next day Matt goes to the fort and finds Gallagher and Spear fined two months pay and doing hard labor, including Gallagher being made to dig what is vaguely suggested to be his own grave. Lieutenant Adams relates to Matt that he is concerned about Spear cracking under the pressure. Sure enough, Spear deserts and hides in Kitty's room. Matt wants Spear to turn himself in, and devises a plan to have Kitty precede him into the room with an armful of groceries so that Spear won't shoot him. It works. Matt disarms Spear and then talks to him about turning himself in. Chester sees Adams and two other soldiers approaching Kitty's boarding house. Matt tells Spear to hide in a closet. Kitty lets Adams into her room. Matt, Kitty and Chester send Adams on his way. They then talk Spear into giving himself up. Johnny says he took Paula to the beach party and that she wouldn't go home with Toby saying that she wanted to swim at night, but that she went beyond the breakers and a wave smashed her head against the rocks.
