Farther north the continent seems to be slowly moving over a hot spot. The force beneath Yellowstone caldera was once in southern Idaho where there is a large lava field, but the continent drifted westward.

Wouldn't this effect occur with the Death Valley region as well? IOW, might the next explosive eruption appear farther to the east?

Death Valley is more like Africa’s Great Rift Valley than a hot spot. However, rifting can certainly appear over a hot spot. Iceland comes to mind though, I guess it is over a ridge most accurately.
