SOPA and PIPA Backlash Delightfully Continues
Reason ^ | January 18, 2012 | Lucy Steigerwald

Maybe you're sick to death of all the to-do over SOPA (the Stop Online Piracy Act and its Senate buddy the Protect Intellectual Property Act or PIPA) or you just really needed your Wikipedia fix today (don't worry, you can still read their SOPA page!). But really, isn't it awesome that people won't shut up about something actually important for once?

Reason didn't participate, but don't take that as any sort of endorsement of nosy government activities. Nick Gillespie reported earlier today on the protest and how it has drawn support from all sides of the political spectrum.

What's interesting is that powerful people might be listening to this outcry as it's coming not just from the teeming masses, or from civil liberties standbys like Salon's Glenn Greenwald, but from powerful tech people like Facebook founder Mark Zuckeberg, Wikipedia owner Jimmy Wales, and of course the folks at Google.

One thing that pretty much cuts across the political spectrum us abuse of police power and 4th amendment issues. SOPA, PIPA, GPS on cars, asset forfeiture - most people on the left and right are against them. We don’t use this natural alliance often enough or very proficiently.

The whole episode makes me shake my head at the incompetence of Congress. They can't do ANYTHING right.

Piracy is (debatably) a problem, but never doubt governmental urges to treat hangnail problems with chainsaw solutions.

Well said...

It’s hard to celebrate because some of the anti-SOPA people were also strongly in favor of using the govt to force net neutrality.

And while we tried to stop that in congress, the FCC decided to go ahead with it anyway. Thanks a lot Google.

I can’t read this whole article because I’m using a Kindle, but I read something only briefly last week that mentioned that out of the 29 legislators who opposed the bill, 26 were Republicans. So are we talking that the majority of the Rat party is for it? Is that right? I haven’t been following this too closely. My god, if that’s true and the Repubs do not advertise the hell out of that in every College campus in existence, then they are truly truly gone. There’s the potential here for completely wiping out the youth vote for the Rats. Taking away file-sharing from college kids and other kids old enough to vote is like taking away booze and hookers from a Kennedy. All hell is going to break loose.

Here’s my prediction: the government will go all RIAA on us. Now that they can’t shut down every ISP on a bureaucrat’s whim, they’ll start prosecuting individuals. They’ll probably start with people who signed an anti-SOPA petition.

From: Chris Dodd and SOPA

.. Criss Dodd stepped down from the Senate, to strategically become chairmen of the Motion Picture Association, in what would become a leading advocate for the Online "Piracy" Act.

...Dodd has come under intense criticism for his role at the MPAA in the SOPA debate. He is not allowed to directly lobby in Congress, so he has acted as a coordinator of the association's activities in Washington, which were focused for the last several months in large part on passing the SOPA bill

YOU HAVE *ALL* MISSED IT!!!

The *very* next day (Jan 19):

The FBI instituted back door SOPA by shutting down and making a test case of file host MEGAUPLOAD!

US government hits Megaupload with mega piracy indictment

MEGAUPLOAD *THOUGHT* they had "safe harbor" by removing files immediately for copyright complaints, without even examining the legal claim. (Porn fighters report and have removed stuff they don't even own.)

The Feds will browbeat the "MEGAUPLOAD 7" into guilty pleas and asset forfeitures.

Then they will intimidate all the others:

AZLiberty, please comment on post 10 in light of what you said about going after individuals. The MEGAUPLOAD 7 needs to become a cause celeb, NOW!

Or the internet is doomed by 1000 cuts.

WHO NEEDS SOPA?
YOUR GOVERNMENT AMOK:

Seized Jan. 19, 2012, the day after SOPA was "withdrawn".

Removing infringing files was *supposed* to be "safe harbor".

The MEGAUPLOAD 7 must become a cause celeb!
