A few folks have said that this stuff works so well, that it saved their engines when they were catastrophically low on oil.

Reminds me of that old product, Slick 50.
I never noticed any improvement.

To me it could be the old time molycoat i.e.(molybdenum disulphide I think) packaged under a new name. Used molycoat years ago in the fledgling aerospace projects.

I like Eric Harley and Gary McNamara’s analysis of things better that that of most national pundits.

OH! I can answer!
In general, these types of additives do provide some level of benefit.
Here’s the thing. The base oil itself becomes the issue. All the whizbang additive may provide 1 zillion miles of service, but the oil itself is good for 5-7K tops before serious degredation begins.
Are they worth it?
You are further ahead with a high quality and expensive Synthetic of proper weight. Additives can indeed provide benefit, but the cost to benefit ratio isn’t that great.
I have pulled apart engines that went 200K on Penzoil and scraped the sludge away and I have pulled apart some with 5000 that ate bearings. Just use great oil, great filter, change regularly to avoid either scenario and you are good to go.

Over the years, the names change, but it is still the same product and sales pitch.

I haven't heard of that product, but there is another product sold in Australia for hard to start engines-It's a real product-not a photoshopped image.

Have you heard of this one?

Good synthetic oil with a good filter changed often will do more than all the additives in the world.

It is awesome stuff! I used about one qt over the last year exactly by the instructions /Runs cooler -increases mpg-power is noticed immediatly.
I have a 90 toyota 4runner 3.0 v6 with 370K on motor I use 5-40 rotella synthetic oil. I never leave oil in longer than 5K miles due to the obvious (carbon) even though oil has got awesome luberosity.

I know nothing about the product. But the entire concept of “testimonials” which were once thought of as being good sales boosters is quite perverted.
Do you really think that an advertisement would be produced wherein an end user said “this stuff sucked, it did nothing, and my engine blew up shortly after I added it to my oil”.
Just sayin’. Testimonials (particularly from strangers or in an ad produced by the mfr) = sub-worthless.

My rule of thumb, if the aviation guys won’t put it in their plane, it sure won’t go in my truck..
There is a limited use for some of the “snake oils” in high mileage engines or early engines, rebuilt classics, etc. For the most part though, forget it. Stick with quality lubricants and proper preventive maintenance.

A long, long time ago I used Duralube in my high-output CRX (12.1:1 compression, lots of motor work done). I travelled from CT to CO, and my head gasket blew in eastern PA. I made it all the way to Indianapolis before getting sick of dropping coolant in the car every 200 miles. (It was out of coolant in about 80)
I replaced the head gasket after arriving in Colorado and finding a mechanic. The engine showed no extreme wear, and I got another 130k out of it before the body finally fell apart. That motor is still in another person’s car, doing just fine.

Remember that "on the Internet, no one knows you are a dog." Are those testimonials from actual customers or from the marketing department? Also, remember when you could tell the difference between a commercial and a talk radio show's show content? Not so much anymore with hosts blending commercials right into their show banter. For me, when I can't tell the difference between opinion and compensated commercial speech, I discount it all. To the hosts, I'd say it weakens
their brand. Then there's the full-on infomercial.
Stay frosty skeptical, my FRiend.
