Lewis and Clark heard unexplainable noises, too, during their expedition - it sounded like cannon fire coming from the west. Sometimes it would be one “shot,” sometimes five or six in a row.
Remember the sonic booms off the east coast in the 70’s (80’s?)? I believe those are also historic.
I remembering reading that in the book UNDAUNTED COURAGE and wondered what the heck it could be. I wonder if the “canon fire” could have been sonic booms but from what???
