One of my favorite duologies is The Sarantine Mosaic, by Guy Gavriel Kay. It is a slightly alternate view of Byzantium under Empress Theodora. I have been to Ravenna o.n the Italian coast to see the tesserae in the church of San Vitale. Spectacular.
