Reminds of a a two hour show, either on the Smithsonian Channel or the History Channel, that covers some of the underground areas in Germany from the war, including factories built into mountains. A lot of it was sealed up by the allies after the war and then forgotten. They went into a few, and there were rocket motors, housing, etc. just left there.

Thanks for posting. It's a fascinating article with lots of details I didn't know.

The story is a testament to the irrepressible human desire for freedom. Even after 50 of their mates were murdered, they were still tunneling.

Without giving up too much, I have a personal and very real connection with Stalag Luft III. And although Steve McQueen made some parts of the Great Escape movie entertaining and fun to watch, his character was none-the-less, completely fictional. One thing that was completely amazing and factual is that Wally Floody was a giant of a man and how he even fit in any of the tunnels is astounding in of itself. Also, real events, such as booze manufacturing, were much more interesting (I thought at least) based on facts and had nothing to do with an American holiday.
