The quiet victory of Mia & the kids Woody left behind

As celebrity scandals go, it’s probably second only to the O.J. trial: Woody Allen leaving Mia Farrow, his girlfriend and muse of 14 years, for her adopted teenage daughter Soon-Yi.

That was way back in 1992, and what was unthinkable then has long since come to pass: Woody Allen has been forgiven by the public at large. His most recent film, “Midnight in Paris,” has made over $56 million at the US box office to date — his highest-grossing film ever. Along with Elaine May and Ethan Coen, he contributed a one-act play to Broadway’s “Relatively Speaking,” which opened this past October. He was recently the subject of a worshipful, two-part “American Masters” special on PBS.

Farrow, meanwhile, largely gave up acting to focus on her humanitarian work, with a special interest in the war-torn regions of Africa. In 2000, she became one of UNICEF’s most prominent ambassadors; in 2008, with a Wall Street Journal op-ed co-authored by her son Ronan, she got Steven Spielberg to step down from the advisory board for the Olympics in Beijing over human-rights abuses.

Today, however, it’s Ronan who’s the star. He is the former couple’s only biological child, and was originally named Satchel; Farrow changed his name after the split, as she did with Dylan, the daughter she and Allen adopted together. (She is now Malone.)

There’s no doubt that Woody Allen is a little perv. I never understood how directors found it plausible to put him in movies where he was the romantic lead. Oh that’s right. Most of the time, he was the director!!

Saying all of that, every once in a while a Woody Allen project turns out to be a very good movie. Radio Days and The Front are two examples. I think that his latest (Midnight in Paris) falls in that same venue. I recommend it to anyone. Excellent movie. Even when they are poking fun at the tea party and conservatives. It’s done in a tasteful, funny way and not malicious.

To: I cannot think of a name
way to go Woodman.

Uh, Woodman is that other pervert film maker (in the loosest terms). I deny having knowledge of any further details!

I'd bet anything he'll be trading in Soon soon, since she's lost whatever youthful charm she once had (not that she ever was anything worth writing home about), for some new 20 year old chippie. He's got a lifelong history of hitting on kiddies - Manhattan is a thinly-cloaked story about his 'relationship' with Stacey Nelkin, who was a 17 year old highschooler when he started 'dating' her. And I mention his first wife was only 16 when he married her?

There should be a parody of Woody as being part of an inbred hillbilly Jewish family (close to the movie Deliverance). Woody and his daughter comes to NY city to get “really plume sophisticated.” Zany misadventures follow, he becomes a rhinestone cowboy for a while, makes movies and is hailed a genius by the French cinema. Roman Polanski makes a cameo appearance... that kind of thing.
