I LOVE the apparel of that era. The linen suits with the silk blouses that the women of means wear in DA are breath taking.

Ooooooh, tonight's episode was SO absorbing, dramatic and entertaining. All the plots are thickening....and it's hard to wait till next week.

Mr. Bates has put on some weight in his face, but he's still devastatingly devastating, LOL.

“Bad acting, bad writing, and bad accents!”

And a bad review, ... yours. Geez, how can one person see Downton Abbey just the exact opposite of how most everyone else sees it. Maybe you need your specs adjusted. This is a wonderful series, and I’m loving every second of it, especially Mr. Bates, who needs to come back to the Abbey as fast as possible. Can’t live without him, lol.

I suspect you are a male and think this series the same as going to a “chick flick”. If it isn’t an action plot, it’s not worth watching. Ah, the difference between the sexes. So I make allowances if you are a typical American male. That’s all right, I don’t like car chase movies, as a female, myself. Each to their own.

The Matthew-Mary enigma is like a Jane Austen plot. Too much pride on both of their parts.

Not surprised at the stunt Thomas pulled to get pulled back from the front lines, but it did take guts to do what he did.

Wonder if Lord Grantham gets shipped off to war as he desires.

The Mrs. Bates twist is interesting, but not entirely unexpected. I didn’t think Bates and Anna would have an easy go of it. Got to keep the suspense going with that relationship. I have a feeling Mrs. Bates will meet an untimely demise, but not sure how or who will be responsible for it.

Wonder how the new housemaid will figure in the mix. She’s got a lot of spunk and is a head turner. She’s going to shake things up somehow.

Lots more to look forward to, for sure.

Good evening, m'lords and ladies.

I hope you all remembered to put the tea kettle on and tune into Episode Two tonight.

It was mahvelous.....new plots, new tangles, new cliffhangers.

I was doing a post-episode telephone reprise with another freeper afterwards. We both agreed we wish the series would not end with this season but return again next year with the stories of the next upstairs, downstairs generation of Abbey-ites experiencing the twenties and thirties straight through World War II. Wouldn't THAT be fascinating, also!

Interested in your comments on tonight's show.

Cheerio and pip, pip.....

After having to watch my Packers lose in a heartbreaking defeat, it was nice to be able to hunker down with the delicious DA to lick my green and gold wounds.

My friend in Arizona and I wait for it all week!

I am worried about Bates and Anna. He said it will be “soon”..but hoping it’s not a star crossed lover tragedy in the making.

And who is going to be found in bed together next week?
(flash in preview).
I say it’s Daisy and William.
My friend says it Shirley and the new officer.
Thoughts?

“And poor homely Edith”

Edith is very complex, childlike, attention seeking in the shadow of her more likable and good looking sisters, bewildered at times, manipulative but always vulnerable.

She might surprise us and show a different side to have found her compassionate niche in helping soldiers. More will be revealed.
But why doesn’t she sneak back to the farmer who wanted to ...be with her?

The writing is splendid, the acting superb, and the cinematography is first rate. However, my primary motivation for watching is that the young lady who portrays Lady Mary might as well be the twin of my first love in college. Sigh.....

Excellent episode tonite! Will Mr. Bates off his wife to get rid of her, or will she do herself in and set it up to look like her husband, Mr. Bates, did it in order to get revenge for his dumping her, or what. Somehow, Mrs. Bates has to be written out of the script if true love is to succeed between Bates and his sweetey. Will Sybil end up marrying the chauffeur or not? How will Matthew dump his fiance so that Mary and Matthew will end up together? Will the Head Butler and Mrs. Crowley, the Head Housekeeper, end up together also? What are Mrs. O’Brien and Thomas up to? What is their ultimate game plan, or will they both end up being good guys? How will the young scullery maid get out of her unwanted faux betrothal to William? Or will they end up in the sack together and live happily ever after?

Will the Earl go off to war? Will Mrs. O’Brien’s dastardly deed of putting out the bar of soap so that the Earl’s wife slips on it and has a miscarriage get out? How about Mary’s escapade with the Arab guy dying in her bed, and the body being hauled off by she, her mother, and her personal maid. Will that scandal get out? Who will Edith end up with, the one handed soldier?

So many plots and threads, so little time. Will the series continue next year, or do we find out the answer to the above at the end of this season? Stay tuned next week, for more leaking of information from the characters, more gorgeous costumes and jewelry, more great set designs, more wonderful character actors plying their trade. I want more, more, more ....

In thinking a bit more on the story line of Mrs. O’Brien and Thomas, I’m thinking it may be difficult to make good guys out of them as we all know that Mrs. O’Brien caused the death of the baby of the Earl and his wife, and I have the feeling that Thomas was responsible for the death of the Arab guy who was in the sack with Mary, probably by poisoning him, as the Arab guy knew Thomas was gay, and could rat him out at any time. But then again, ... Well, the thlot plickens.

Good morning. I was hoping for a chat about last night’s DA.

Nothing particular surprising in last night’s episode.

I was of a mind that Edith’s character might be in stages of rehabilitation. Took a step forward last night.

I’m a bit surprised that Thomas is being promoted in his duties as so many, inc. Lord Grantham, knew of his past foibles and he was in the process of being canned from his job when the war started. I guess the doctor is holding sway over that situation.

The information about Lavinia and her dealings with Carlyle was interesting, but I don’t know if I trust it entirely to be true. I think she many be trying to whitewash her past, making it look more altruistic that it really is.

Sounds like Bates is on his way to ridding himself of his wife.

I think the ones in bed in the previews were the new tartish maid and the officer she’s been flirting with. Knew that was going to happen.

I have a sinking feeling that William is either going to be killed or else be severely disabled.

"And who is going to be found in bed together next week? Thoughts?"

Your picks are very promising....the signs of romantic attraction were everywhere in last night's episode. What amorous and sometimes naughty things went on in the very proper households of the upper and lower crusts of the day (and still do, heheh).

I'm opining that in addition there are two undercover romances subtly interwoven into the plot which may be unnoticed by viewers....that of the Doctor and Isobel Crawley (Matthew's mother and mother-superior of the Abbey convalescent quarters).....and that of head butler, Mr. Carson and head housekeeper, Mrs. Hughes. These two already seem to relax and fit together like a long-married pair.

However, I don't look for these two couples to sprightly hop into bed anytime soon as arthritis and bad backs could certainly get in the way, LOL.

I second your possibilities of “simmering” romances. Last season when Mrs. (Miss, Ms.?) Hughes spurned the proposal of that long time friend, I wondered if perhaps it was because she harbored feelings for Carson and that was another reason she didn’t want to leave DA (apart from her devotion to her job there).

The doctor and Isobel are always at loggerheads, esp. over treatment options. But often that’s how romances begin, esp. in this genre. They show passion to one another now, but it’s antagonistic. The passion could easily become amiable.

Do you mean Mrs. Hughes? She’s the head housekeeper, Mrs. Crowley is Matthew’s mother. I do think that Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes could end up together, or it would be nice if they just remained very close but platonic friends.
