"I use the leaves as well as the bulb at the top of the stem."

I've never bought or grown Kohlrabi. Can you give us an example of what you do with the bulb and leaves? Sounds like a wild garlic plant with a bulb on top. Thanks!

It is a cabbage offshoot, cold hardy to about 10F. Peel the swelling at the top of the stem, then slice into strips for dipping or chunks and use in soups or stews or stir fry. Can be shredded and used like coleslaw. After a freeze it is sweeter. sweet slight cabbage taste. Leaves can be used also like any other green leafy vegetable.

I peel Kohlrabi and eat it out of hand like a Turnip. Root Maggots and the Cabbage Worm are a problem in our area and I have to grow it under a floating row cover. As it grows if forms a bulb the size of a Turnip just above the soil line and the leaves grow out of that.

The consistency and size of kohlrabi is much like a turnip, except it tastes like a slightly spicy cabbage. Some varieties get huge, up to 10 lbs. Comes in green, red, white, and purple. They mature faster than cabbage or broccoli and can be planted much closer together.

Basically I slice them and dip them in ranch dressing, or eat with some good dark beer. Mom like them in stir fry. I like White Vienna myself. Gourmet seed has some good varieties:
