Read it years ago. A must read for anyone of isn’t sure what the term “American exceptionalism” actually means.
Absolutely agree! I was very disappointed that this book is not available in an electronic format, so I bought a used paperback copy that literally fell apart in my hands as I read it. Truly an American hero of the highest order.
Should be required reading in high schools.
May God Bless Chuck Yeager!
Agreed. I also read it years ago and it is still one of the best biographies (auto or otherwise) I have read.
Chuck Yeager is an amazing guy.
He’s no John Glen
I read it when I was a 20 something and still refer to specific sections of the book from time to time.
Most recently that I can remember I mentioned him jumping to a frozen beach in South Korea and bustin his ass.
They made him out to be a badass in the Right Stuff, but that pales in comparison to the book. I wonder if there’s more than a handful of men alive today who would even seriously consider doing for money the things he volunteered for willingly.
And dragging his wounded buddy over the alps was just incredible.
As I recall, Yeager relays a story of Glen being a bit of a putz, landing his plane in soft sand and causing a huge headache in retrieval despite being warned repeatedly. If I remember right that is.
Its been 20 years or more since I read it and I remember a lot of specifics about the book.
I should read it again soon.
And then going to his commanding general and being ‘incredibly persuasive’ in getting back on the flight line, which at the time I guess was not allowed. Mr. Yeager is invincible.
It made a hell of an impact on me as well. I have recommended it countless times over the years. That man is the definition of Heroic American.
Now if his kids would just let him live in peace.....
Imagine being a CO looking at Yeager and having to say “no”.
Not a job I’d want ;)
He’s still living. I think he’s very near 90 now.
He was campaigning for Duncan Hunter in 08.
One of the best books ever. And true. He is an American genius and hero.

It was Neil Armstrong.
