dictionaries ad nauseam | 29 December 2011 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

crepitate \KREP-i-teyt\, verb
To make a crackling sound; crackle.

Example sentences:
The lampwicks crepitate; their flames are about to go out, long mosquitoes flit in rapid circlings about them.
-- Gustave Flaubert, The Temptation of Saint Anthony

This horrible talk, however, evidently possessed a potent magic for my friend; and his imagination, checked for a while by the influence of his kinsman, began to ferment and crepitate.
-- Henry James, Stories Revived

Etymology:
Crepitate is from the Latin crepitare which meant “to rustle or chatter.”

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Is it on the 6th or the 8th?

ephiphany is the 6th, but that Sunday is the 8th, so that’s why they’ll celebrate it at Church on the 8th.

When Pelosi hears her skin begin to crepitate, she knows it’s time for another trip to the plastic surgeon.

It is sunny and 62, and I have just ruined a pair of work gloves with expanding spray foam that I was using to seal around a couple of windows...

I thought I heard Obama say
The economy is getting better-
And if the Arctic crepitates
No one will need a sweater

He’s deaf to all the rest of us
And Michelle is even deafer
It takes a $270.00 dinner
To feed he and the first heifer

So just enjoy your hamburger helper
Your ramen noodles and such things-
And if Nancy really wants to depart
Let’s give her a set of wings

One more trip for Nancy and her face will fracture from the strain. She looks like a monster already.

Thank you!

I did just fine sealing around the french doors with the foam, but when I was doing a window in the kitchen, the stuff somehow spewed all over my gloves as it expanded, creating a mess. Good thing that I have plenty of gloves...

I didn’t think it was possible to get that much botox into a person’s face-a mask is more expressive than Nancy’s face, and not nearly as scary looking.

The skies are sunny over Hawaii where our First Family frolics in the surf and on the golf course. The rest of us have a hiemal existence, with dreary skies and cold winds. The Hawaiian vacation the Firsters foisted on us is an exlex burden on our tax dollars. Most Americans are so downtrodden and apathetic that they ocitate in boredom instead of experiencing the outrage they should. If they did protest they would probably find calvous thugs at their doors who would gladly crepitate their weary bones for speaking out. Thus so many have given up. Perhaps, Iowans will spark an interest in them to seek relief.

You have to wonder, when Nancy looks at her daughters lovely face what she is thinking about her own mask?

“Thinking about her own mask?” About the only thing she can be sure of is that it will probably be a real hit next Halloween...
