I remember one of the first “war movies” that made a big impression upon me as a kid was “Wake Island.”

In the early 1970's I worked at a cold storage facility, and one of the regular local bobtail drivers was an old guy about 75....he'd been a civilian on Wake Island and wasn't a kid at the time; spent the war as a POW.

He was a crusty old fart and when a Japanese driver would come in (lots of local fish markets), he'd walk up and berate him and his ancestors.......this guy was way beyond giving a sh*t. He absolutely hated anything to do with the Land of the Rising Sun.

The sad thing about Wake was that had the scheduled re-enforcements been on the island, a complete Marine Defense Battalion, instead of half a battalion, then the Japanese could not have taken Wake. They would not have had enough troops and ships available to overcome a complete defense battalion with a standard TOE.
