Babs was never as revered among ordinary Americans as she was made out to be, and Oprah became irrelevant when a substantial chunk of her hyper-emotional female audience woke up to what a radical leftist she is.
Up til then, Oprah had a money-making machine that rivaled Ben Bernacke's.
Nevertheless she thought us middle class white folk too rich and compelled us to turn over more of the fruits if our labor to her government friends.

Ironically, saw this article while recording a documentary about a real pioneer for women, who was “Oprah” long before anybody ever heard of Oprah Winfrey: Ruth Lyons.
Her “50/50 Club” was one of the highest rated shows in the country, despite only being seen in four TV markets (Cincinnati, Dayton, Columbus, and Indianapolis). My Mom was a big fan of her successor, Bob Braun, in the 1970’s.

For years Cincinnati and the Midwest punched far above their weight in TV and radio through the influence of Crosley Broadcasting, WLW Radio and the WLW TV stations (WLWT, WLWI, WLWD, WLWC). The list of mid-westerners who rose to national prominence from the 30’s though the 80’s is very long.
So Barbra put Oprah in the back of the bus.
I thought I read somewhere that OWN was going to be re-niched and aimed at black women?
