Goodbye Amy Pond - Karen Gillan to leave Dr Who
The Telegraph ^ | 12/15/11 | Telegraph TV

Karen Gillan is to leave Doctor Who during the next series.

The 24-year-old actress - who plays Amy Pond - will be written out in a "heartbreaking" storyline, show boss Steven Moffatt said.

A new companion for The Doctor is being lined up but producers said they would give no clues about their identity.

Karen and her screen husband Arthur Darvill - who plays Rory - will both be written out. The Scottish actress, who will soon be seen in a BBC drama as model Jean Shrimpton, has had a starring role for two series and has become hugely popular.

Moffatt said: "The final days of the Ponds are coming. It's during the next series. I'm not telling you when and I'm not telling you how. That story is going to be a heartbreaking one."

He said that The Doctor would be "taking a new friend", adding: "I'm not going to tell you anything about he, she or it."

Matt Smith said he would miss his co-star, who joined the programme at the same time as him.

He added: "We took over the show and we really had to hold hands and help each other through it. It's very disappointing. But this show is about change and regeneration."

In June last year, Gillan hit back at criticism over Amy's sexy demeanour - saying feminism was not the issue any more.

The flame-haired Scot claimed her character's mini-skirts are typical of what young women like to wear.

The series came under fire from some viewers for a scene in which Amy tried to seduce the Doctor, but Gillan said they were unlikely to get together romantically as he sees Amy more like an annoying younger sister.

It is understood the decision for Gillan to leave the show was mutual.

I hate to read this. The Doctor & Amy Pond have great chemistry and are a lot of fun to watch.

I liked Amy and Rory myself.

Maybe bring back K9?

I was glad to see him, even briefly in the new series.

Tom Baker apparently hated K9 as it got more fan mail than he did.

I just hope that they will not be killed off. I sort of liked the idea from last year where the Dr. dropped them off at their house and said (something like) “Farewell Mr and Mrs Williams.” let them live their lives and perhaps have more children to raise...ones untouched by the ‘silence.’

Rats. I still miss Billie Piper.

K9 was one of the best companions ever. If they brought him/it back at least he wouldn't leave. Could have merchandising possibilities as well.

I think they should have an ood be the next companion.

Sadness. I sense a great sadness in the fabric of the time-space continuum.

I remember early on fans ripping on her and the Doctor for being “too young” or “too sexy.” They have been may favorite Doctor couple thus far...and Rory, too!

Somewhere I've got a photo of me with a K-9 prop, and another with me entering the TARDIS. It was from a mid-1980s Dr Who/Hitchhikers Guide convention in St Louis. Peter Davidson was there, as was his wife at the time who had played Gillian in the BBC Hitchhikers Guide TV series, and Mark Wing-Davie.

Only a couple of hundred people there, and it was great to be able to spend some time with the stars, without too big a crowd.

The best scene... During the banquet, when they rolled out "The Dish of the Day" (from Hitchhikers Guide) and rolled him right up to Peter Davidson! (PD played the DotD in the BBC TV show).

Good...the sixth season totally sucks...let’s get back to the Monsters and the bad guys and stop the emotionalizing and moralizing....Time to put Gallifrey behind him and move on with the universe...

btw...you should see the pick of Karen in nothing but black latex...HOT!

The Doctor would be "taking a new friend", adding: "I'm not going to tell you anything about he, she or it."

Oh, please don't go Captain Jack Harkness on us. I could not bear it.

I love Amy and Rory but Billie Piper as Rose was my favorite.
