I must tell you that during 9/11, somebody got the idea to cast the movie. Somebody came up with Foster Brooks as Teddy Kennedy. First time I laughed in a week - thanks to Mr. Brooks and that great freeper.
Let me say, as humbly as possible, that I was the Freeper who made the comment about casting Foster Brooks as Ted Kennedy. It was one of my very first posts - I had joined Free Republic in July of 2001. Thank you for the compliment.(I remember someone else commenting that they would need to put Brooks in a fat suit if he played Kennedy!)
I was always a fan of Foster Brooks. His drunk routine was so convincing that many people wondered if he really was drunk on stage (of course, he wasn't.) I remember reading an article about him in which he said that he approached his drunk routine differently from others. Just about every other comedian who played a drunk on stage or in a TV show over-played everything: They would stagger wildly, really slur their words, sing "Sweet Adeline", and just generally act sloppy. Foster Brooks took the opposite approach. He played a guy who was drunk, but trying his best not to let on that he was drunk. Instead of the wild stagger, he would walk with very deliberate steps, stumbling just enough to be noticeable. He had a slight slur in his speech, and would throw in a little (very little) belch every now and then. When he stood still, he would waver slightly, trying his best to appear composed.
