We have three teenagers and a 12-yr-old, so I can relate.
I also work in an office with three other people - approximate ages are 65, 55, and 22. The 22 yr old only understands what we are talking about maybe 10% of the time, unless we’re talking sports. Then he and I drive the other two crazy.

There numbers apparently were vastly reduced and “elephant” here probably has a more generic than specific sense - like Mammoths, mastodons, etc.
