In the list of iconic radio shows, there is the ‘47 Lux Radio Theater's It's a Wonderful Life. I love Jimmy Stewart like he is family and this is Americana treasure.

12/20/59 "The Red Mystery Matter" Matter #670 Bob Bailey, Forrest Lewis (Red Barrett), Barney Phillips (Buster Favor), Alan Reed, Sr. (Ham Pratt), Lawrence Dobkin (Pat McCracken) ; Writer/Producer/Director - Jack Johnstone ; Announcer - Dan Cubberly ; Expense Account Total - "On the house, Merry Christmas." - Pat McCracken ; CBS ; The strangest disappearance Dollar has ever been called on to investigate. Johnny has been overworked lately. Red Barrett, fishing guide at the Lake Mojave Resort, Arizona, calls him on the advice of Pat McCracken. Red says that something tragic is going to happen at the resort, but doesn't tell Johnny what it is. Dollar travels out to the Resort, at the southern end of the Lake, near Davis Dam. He first meets his old friend Buster Favor, general factotum of the Resort, who says that Red has disappeared, his room a shambles, and there is blood on the floor. Johnny notices a single fish scale among the still wet blood. Ham Pratt says that a car matching the description of Red's was seen turning off the main road in the direction of Temple Bar fishing camp. Johnny goes there - and finds Red - waiting to fish with him. It has all been arranged as a vacation for Johnny by Pat McCracken at Red's new place of employment, Temple Bar. 12/22/49 "The .22 Rifle for Christmas" Program #30 Jack Webb (Joe Friday), Barton Yarborough (Ben Romero) ; Writers - James E. "Jim" Moser & Jack Webb ; Technical Advice - William H. Parker, L.A. Police Chief ; Chief of detectives Thad Brown is in charge of the investigation of missing nine year old Stanley Johnstone. There are bloodstains, and an empty .22 bullet cartridge, in the area where the boy was last seen. Friday and Romero talk to his mother, Ruth. The father is a fireman named George. They discover that the .22 rifle that had been bought as a Christmas present for Stanley was missing. Lieutenant Lee Jones from the police lab reports that the blood was human, type O, which is the same as Stanley's. Officer Levinson finds the gun behind the Johnstone house, and reports that another 8 year old boy, Steven Moreheim, is now missing, too. Mrs. John (Edith) Moreheim is interviewed by Friday and Romero. She says her son's blood type is O. Stanley Johnstone has come home, acting strangely according to his mother. Friday and Romero talk to Stanley, who says he killed Steve by accident, and then he carried him to a small cave where he hid him, and prayed to God that Steve come back to life. The body is recovered. The police are convinced that it was an accident. John Moreheim is devastated. He wants to see Stanley. Forgivingly, he wants to give Stanley the Christmas presents that were to be Steven's. (sus.) (NBC) (27:04)

12/25/55 "Twelfth Night" Program #194 William Conrad (Matt Dillon), Parley Baer (Chester Proudfoot), Howard McNear (Doc Adams), Georgia Ellis (Kitty Russell), John Dehner, Vic Perrin, Helen Kleeb (Mrs. Monger) ; Producer/ Director - Norman Macdonnell ; Writer - John Meston ; Music - Rex Koury ; Sound Patterns - Tom Hanley, Bill James ; Christmas story. Eban Hakes is a "squirrel hunting' Southern mountain-man" from the Ozarks who has his own ideas about the law. The mountain-man is looking for Joff Monger to settle a "family matter," which turns out to be a deadly family feud that is about to be transplanted to Dodge. Eban and Joff are the last survivors of this violent ritual and Matt tries to prevent further bloodshed. Time may be on Matt's side for when Eban finally catches up with his opponent it is Sunday, and Eban and Josh, being principled men, never kill on Sunday. The title Twelfth Night is derived from the Ozark custom of celebrating Christmas on January 6. (On 12/28/57 this episode was rebroadcast on the radio, and coincidentally, a television version aired that same night.) (CBS) (22:14)

12/24/44 "Showing Roswell the Spirit of Christmas" Program#51 William Bendix (Chester A. Riley) ; Sponsor - American Meat Institute ; Director - Don Bernard ; Music - Lou Kosloff ; Announcer - Ken Niles ; "Riley Shows Roswell the Spirit of Christmas" As a favor to his boss, Chester A. Riley has agreed to take in the boss' son for a brief stay Over Christmas. The Stevensons are supposed to be going out of town. Riley wants him to feel at home and so he gets Junior to agree to give up one of his presents. However when the boss' son, Roswell Stevenson, arrives he is a spoiled brat attended by his man-servant, Parks. In order to demonstrate the Christmas spirit, Riley tries to be Morley's ghost to Roswell's Scrooge. Riley take Roswell to skid row, and other interesting places. Riley then reveals that Roswell's mother is really in the hospital and his father was on a park bench outside awaiting word of her fate. Later, Riley learns that Mrs. Stevenson is going to be okay. He and Roswell return to the Riley home (Blue) (29:44)

12/25/49 "The Magic Christmas Tree" Program #75 Eve Arden, Jane Morgan (Mrs. Margaret Davis), Richard Crenna (Walter Denton), Gale Gordon (Osgood Conklin), Gloria McMillan (Harriet Conklin), Jeff Chandler (Mr. Boynton) ; Writer - Al Lewis; Connie Spends Christmas Eve Alone. A Quiet Christmas At Home. Surprise Guests On Christmas Eve. ; CBS ; Connie is reading "The Night Before Christmas" to Mrs. Davis' cat, Minerva, when someone is at the door. Miss Brooks buys a "Magic" Christmas Tree from a young urchin door-to-door salesman. Connie has mistletoe all over her residence when Osgood, Martha and Harriet Conklin, plus Walter Denton and Mr. Boynton show up. When Walter touches the Christmas tree something happens, and he tells Harriet she needs to be more like Miss Brooks. The tree seems to glow. When Mr. Conklin touches the tree he becomes fun-loving and happy go lucky. When Mr. Boynton touches the tree he becomes very amorous toward Connie. Then Connie wakes up. The doorbell rings, and the whole scene begins to play out again, people are saying exactly what they said in Connie's dream. She has Mr. Boynton touch the tree - nothing happens. Then the door bell rings again and it is the urchin selling Magic Christmas Trees. Connie buys for trees for $2. (29:42)

What - no Let's Pretend? No Smilin' Ed's Gang? No No School Today? No Grand Central Station? No Land of the Lost?...okay, okay, I know they were Saturday morning programs...but to me they really were the most happy and magical, maybe because they came at the beginning of the two day escape from school and obligations and doing what everybody else wanted...Sunday night, on the other hand......
