When I was a teen, I lived in the upstairs of my parents duplex.
Dad allowed me to paint murals on the wall and I used permanent marker to define the edges of the work.

After I left home and joined the Navy, Dad went over the murals with paint.
Boy were we both surprised that the permanent marker bleeds through paint!

Poor Pop! He ended up putting up a new layer of insulation and sheet rock to cover the murals.
The darn things are still there behind the new walls LoL
Talk about permanent! LoL

You’d think Pop would be pissed but he was cool about it. He said the new insulation lowered the energy cost.

I did some other murals in rent homes, I have no idea how they dealt with that shit! LoL!

Those walls will be the topic of a thread hosted by Sunken Civ, some day in the future! Hope they can link to this thread to unravel the mystery.

FWIW, pigmented shellac will cover most types of marker, AFAIK all of them, and not bleed through. I discovered this when employees wrote notes to each other on the walls in a home we were working in.

Had a friend in college that painted designs on his dorm room walls using a mix of water and laundry powder.

In normal lighting you couldn't see it, but when the black light was turned on.... interesting stuff. :)

Our daughter did that to her bedroom. After bleeding through several coats of paint, we finally got help from Home Depot. A bucket of “Kills” did the trick!
