Tonight, my wife and I attended the Candlelight Processional at Disneyland, a yearly tradition at the park that dates back to the days when Walt was still with us. Choirs from around Southern California participated, and the host was Gary Sinise.
It is frustrating for my wife and I sometimes when we go to the park. The generic 'happy holidays' or 'come celebrate the holidays' or 'Believe in the magic of the holidays' are the typical Disney themes presented to guests. In fact, while we were standing in line to get seats, the nightly tree lighting happened, where the crowd was invited to shout 'Happy Holidays' to light the Christmas tree.
Christmas exists at the park - sometimes you have to hunt around to find it. The Victorian Carolers are our favorites, and most typically can be found in the Disney Grand Californian singing next to one of the most wonderful Christmas trees on the property.
But this was our first experience with the Candlelight Processional, and something we plan on making a yearly tradition to attend, even if we end up moving out of state. This event also takes place at Disney's Epcot Center as well, but only happens for a single weekend at Disneyland.
A program dedicated to Jesus, where he is the center, not a mouse in a sweater. And it was a special treat to have Gary Sinise host the program at Disneyland, something he's done over a hundred times at Walt Disney World.
The link is for a youtube video of the end of the program which concludes with the ever famous Hallelujah Chorus, which was magnificent with nearly five hundred singers backed up by a live orchestra.
A moment of humor, before the second performance this evening started, a police helicopter came close to the park, and Gary Sinise held up the program to let it depart the area, commenting that 'I just can't get away from them...'
Thank you for posting this.
We attended the CP in Walt Disney World—it was a tremendously moving telling of the story of Christmas. I really wished we could have heard the reading by Gary Sinise or Roy Disney.
Disneyland?? Isn’t there a church you can go to?
Does the text below sound familiar to you? Just askin’
1 Judge not, that ye be not judged.
2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. Mk. 4.24
3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?
5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.
6 ¶ Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.

Why did you leave out all the scriptures that tell us how to judge a righteous judgement?
Wow, I didn’t know about this. Very nice.
Another unusual place to find the spirit of Christmas done right (according to this Jewish girl who loves Christmas carols!) is the bellagio fountains in Las Vegas. You must see the display with the music. it’s not only all the cutesy Santa songs. “O Holy Niight” is out of this world (whoops, pun). I highly recommend it. If it moves me that much, imsgine how much it will move you.
Thanks for posting. I had no idea Disneyland did this. I’ll have to mark next year’s calendar!
Man, all the griping on this forum about how Christmas, how Jesus is slowly being removed from life; and here at a major theme park (i.e. Mission Field), a day is set aside to reverence Him, and we get “Isn’t there a church you can go to?”
Seriously? I guess Jesus, Christmas and any mention of Him belongs, no should be contrained within church walls?
I think it is great and wonderful thing that in SoCal, where there is so much else that gets ‘worshipped’ that Disneyland still allows Jesus and Christmas to be celebrated.
I say we put this in the ‘good news’ column and move on. Not going to grouse about what we don’t have.
Still waiting for the CEO of ESPN to resign over not turning over a taped confession of child rape over to the police.
I’ve banned ESPN in all its forms in this house. I miss Sportcenter, but I’m not going to support a company that concealed evidence of child rape for the sake of protecting a money-maker like Jim Boeheim.
As a Cubmaster, I’m just shaking my head watching everything that ISN’T happening over the Penn State/Syracuse child rape scandals. I’ll tell you this: if they found child rape (Sandusky was raping a 10-year old (Webelo Scout age)) in not an ISOLATED Pack, but two Packs, there would be a national tarring and feathering of BSA.
No ESPN until somebody swings for condoning child rape. When you sit on a taped confession for almost ten years (how many other boys were raped in 10 years?), you are condoning child rape.
I’ve been to the one at EPCOT a couple of times.
It is indeed moving and shouldn’t be missed.
Never got “Lt. Dan” though.
The CP is pretty nifty in Disneyworld.
you just have to be VERY carefull to ensure the time you go is not some flaming or crazy (or both) left wing nutjob.
