ALL ACCESS hears that CUMULUS cuts have hit the on-air staff at Talk KGO-A(M)/SAN FRANCISCO hard, with hosts GIL GROSS (2-4p), GENE BURNS (7-10p), RAY TALIAFERRO (1-5a), and JOHN ROTHMANN (10p-1a) let go on THURSDAY as the station prepares to add more news programming on MONDAY (12/5).
GROSS, the nationally-known host and newsman who joined KGO's lineup in 2007 and confirmed his departure to ALL ACCESS, bade his local listeners farewell on FACEBOOK, posting, "It's been fun SAN FRANCISCO. Truly the most fun I've ever had was at KGO. See you soon."
KGO will be going to an essentially all-News format 2p-midnight on weekdays with the exception of RONN OWENS' midday show, with BRIAN COPELAND retaining a weekend show, according to the SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE's MATIER AND ROSS.
Holy freaking wow, that is major.
Gil Gross is nothing special.
Gene Burns and John Rothman have possibly been at KGO for 20 and 15 years respectively.
I usually listen to Rothman every night. He is extremely intelligent and perhaps the most knowledgeable person I have ever encountered on 20th century US history but an impossible SF liberal *except* for his unstinting support of Israel.
Quite the bloodbath.
Burns = Borderline-entertaining at times, but basically a gourmet-liberal with a libertarian veneer. The greatest thing about the program was that Dr. Bill Wattenburg (the scourge of the enviro-whackos) often subbed for Gene.
Rothmann = A liberal on every issue except defense of Israel.
Taliaferro = The definition of moonbattery.
Summary: KSFO kicks talk-radio @$$ in the belly of the Bay Area beast.
And they kept Ray Talieferro? My beeber is stunned!
I definitely agree with you wrt KSFO, but I take it you know that KGO and KSFO are owned by the same company and work from the same building.
For KGO to can Burns and Taliaferro (absolutely agree, total moonbat, but he has probably been there for 30+ years!) is like (you will forgive my extremely out of date analogies) the Beatles firing Ringo, like Dallas firing Larry Hagman as JR Ewing. In the SF Bay Area where stuff never changes (they still idolize hippies up here and like the Grateful Dead) this is unthinkable!
And then question arises, if KSFO is playing Rush & Hannity & Levin and Ingraham, who the hell are they going to plug those holes with on KGO?
Oops. Just read the story. Ray is a gone.
“And they kept Ray Talieferro? My beeber is stunned!”
No, they offed Ray! Even more stuning!!
Ray is on the air right now! Aparently, he has not gotten the memo. <p? Do the folks at the main office that laid him off know that Ray is umm..... uh.... mmmm...... How shall we say; The former President of the Northern California NAACP?
I’d strongly recommend a real winner to KGO: The Barack Hussein Obama Show. He’ll be free to debut on 1/20/2013.
I wonder if Rothmann can get his money back on the Leaf that he prattles on ad-nausium about.
Someone on a blog in S.F. mentioned Burns was on but it was a rerun. I guess the news blocks start on Monday.
Ray says he is getting death threats and may get some more from his show tonight. Sheesh.
Ah. That must be what they are doing with Ray. Thank you. I was wondering how they were pulling this off.
“I wonder if Rothmann can get his money back on the Leaf that he prattles on ad-nausium about.”
Maybe he can trade it in on a self-igniting Volt.
Teleprompter-driven radio — that would be a “First”!
Ray was a ranter.
Dr. Bill Wattenburg..on the other hand will be greatly missed.
Were it npt for his campaign against MTBE that poisonous crap would still be on our Gasoline.
As a business move this full scale shift to all news makes little sense given the success of the former format.
I will miss Bill Wattenburg the most. Taliafero was living in the past it seemed to me.
Why would the owners think we would want constant news? egad !Jack Swanson also gone,He may have just quit...
So what do you all think will happen to KSFO Morning show?
I remember him well. It was generally assumed that he was a homosexual.
He’ll find another place. He’s an intelligent, talented guy.
I am listening to Dr. Bill Wattenburg’s new show on the internet....via TuneIn.com
