I seem to be having a problem with my Netgear Router. It is over 3 years old and was given to me by a friend. Anyway, not problems with it UNTIL today. My wife's computer in the other room won't receive the signal. I switched computers and mine won't receive the signal either so the problem isn't her computer. Also her computer was picking up signals from other wireless sources in the neighborhood.
While my computer is attached by wire to the router it works fine even when I switch to wireless. But when not attached directly it doesn't pick up the signal.
Is there a way to fix this or am I due for another router. I prefer to fix it if possible. I notice in the illustration below that power light is on on the left, the #3, 5, & 6 lights are also on on my router. I definitely see what should be a checkmark light that isn't on. Am I missing a light? If so, how to fix?
Have you tried turning it off and then back on? usually works for me
Reset and reconfigure the router. You could try a firmware upgrade, too.
Or you could just save your time and buy a new Linksys on Newegg or Amazon.
Routers like most electrical equipment fail over time. Buy a new one tomorrow on Black Friday.
I’ve had the same problem and a similar setup. Multiple reboots of the router and the modem usually help. Have yu recently remodeled your house, moved the furniture, build a concrete wall between rooms? Such things do count.
Will do NOW and report back in a few minutes.
Another thing to check is whether the passcode is synchronized between the wireless router and each of the computers. Since both of your computers are affected at the same time, the wireless router may have lost its passcode or set it to some default value that is not the same as the computers think it should be.
Had to replace my Netgear with a Cisco. Over time I had to reboot often, then several times a day. Then I called my cable provider who told me there was aproblem with the Netgear. Don’t remember the details, but ZBest Buy guru confirmed it. $80 later for the Cisco and zI’ve been problem free for over a year.
Outside that, power cycle that thing and check for a firmware upgrade from the vendor..
g'luck
I am on a Netgear router right now I have had for a few years. It worked fine for a couple years and then one day I could not connect. After a little research I rebooted it (unplugged from power for 60sec) and it started working again. I have to reboot it randomely since then. Sometimes it will go for a month, sometimes less than a week. Unplugging it for a minute always makes it work again. It’s strange that I hardly have an issue with this computer(occasionaly), but my wife or daughter will be unable to connect so I reboot it. I think the only fix is replacement.
Get a new router and configure it accordingly.
If you reset everything, make sure you have the instructions for configuring it. For now, turn everything off, then on. If that doesn’t work, go into control panel and under network put your Wireess network first.
Good luck.
This router is about two years old in constant use but would like to fix if possible.
#1 - on = Power is on
#2 - off = 2.4 GHz wireless band is not being used.
#3 - on = 5.0 Ghz wireless band is being used
#4 - off = No USB devices are connected to this router
#5 - on = You are getting a signal from your cable or DSL connection to the internet.
#6 - 4(on) = You have a wired connection using port #4 - 1(off), 2(off), 3(off) - You do not have wired connections on ports #1, #2, or #3
Those lights also suggest that it is a dual-band N type router. Am I correct?
One more question - Do you have the instruction manual?
Is there a reset button in the back. If so hold down 5 seconds with a toothpick.
My netgear is very similar so I just rebooted it. The check mark light came on along with the power light when I first plugged it in. As soon as the signal light started to blink the checkmark light went out. So it is normal for the checkmark to be off I guess. Hope that helps a little
Last spring I had this problem persist over days. Comcast phone support suggested that it was a router problem. They always say that, told me their technician when he arrived at the house, diagnosed the problem and discovered an issue with the wiring outside the house. Fixed, but didn’t, and a second technician came, said that the other guy didn’t do it right, and finally fixed it for good.
Anyway, in the meantime, I started shopping for a router, reading reviews, and noticed that the prices of routers had gone up, or was it a wrong impression?
(By the way, I learned last week that Michael Crichton hated the word “meantine”.)
On your wife’s computer, can you tell if she is not receiving a signal or cannot connect (possible password issue)?
Unplug, plug in again, it will work fine. It happens to mine too.
