Instinct is kind of a meaningless catch-all term to me. It's just an attempt to deny that animals exhibit willful intent. But we know they do.

Even guinea pigs, who are not the most complex little beasts in the world, have individuality. I've never met two who behaved exactly the same. They all had their own little quirks of temperment, communication, dietary tastes, etc.

Of course and they can be trained to row tiny boats that generate electricity while one of them is chatting row! row!row!
