Actually, “thought crime” was hasty. Still, I’m against it. Sending my kid to school wearing a yarmulke would also put him/her in harm’s way - more so, in fact. Neither is a reason for the state to take a child away from it’s parents.
I know what you’re saying and, ideally speaking I agree with you, people should be free to be whom they are, free from harassment and threats just for being.
But that is not how society works, even in Jewish circles. :)
