Libyan military commanders have declared that Saif al-Islam Gaddafi has been arrested near Ubari in southern Libya.

In a press conference held on Saturday, Bashir al-Taylib, a military commander, told reporters that Saif al-Islam had been captured and will be moved to Zintan.

Saif al-Islam, the son of Muammar Gaddafi, has been on the run since the fall of Libya and the death of his father. He has been detained with several bodyguards while trying to flee to Niger, according to a government official. He is said to be in good health.

"The information said he was captured is accurate," he said, adding that more details regarding the capture will be given later on in the day.

"We are happy with capture, which is why we told you quickly, in order to inform the Libyan people," he said. "We hope the Libyan people will do well now after the capture of Saif al-Islam, and they need to move forward and take care of themselves and their country."

The press conference ended with cries from the podium of "God is great!".

Mohammad Alalaqi, the Libyan justice minister, told Al Jazeera that Saif al-Islam will face a fair trial according to international standards. "We do not mind having international observers at the trial," he said. "We will coordinate with the International Criminal Court on the trial."

Al Jazeera's Anita McNaught, reported from Misrata that residents were out in their cars celebrating the news.
