ALBION, Ind. (WANE) - A Fort Wayne man died Monday while participating in a reduction hunt at Chain O'Lakes State Park. Officials say he suffered an injury to his liver that possibly happened during an encounter he had with a deer he shot.

Indiana Conservation Officers have closed the investigation into the death of Paul J. Smith, 62, after the Noble County Coroner’s office ruled it was due to a lacerated liver.

According to the Department of Natural Resources, Smith called his son shortly after 9 a.m. and left a message that he'd shot a buck. When Smith’s son returned the called around 10:30 a.m., Smith told him that after coming down from his tree stand to field dress and tag the deer, he discovered it was still alive and that he scuffled with the animal before killing it with a knife.

I would like to say hello to all of you anti-hunting idiots who are posting extremely immature comments about the hunter.

I shot my 10 point buck on Monday evening.

One shot, one kill. Instant drop. Dead instantly.

I checked to make sure he was dead by using the end of my barrel (the end the bullet comes out of) to touch the deer’s eyeball several times. No blink so I knew it was dead.

I then said a prayer thanking God for the opportunity to kill this deer, for the fact that the kill was quick, and that the animal suffered very little pain.

I then drug the animal to the house, took pictures to show others, hung it up, and proceeded to field dress it. Field dressing is when you cut it’s stomach open and stick your arms up inside it’s chest and pull out all of it’s internal organs. If you don’t do this, the internal organs will quickly start to decompose and taint the taste of the meat. You also cut off the penis, balls, and asshole. Finally you save the heart and liver for a great meal later.

The next day I delivered the carcass to a meat processor. They will cut it up and package the choice cuts the way I like it. They will also use some of the meat to make me 15 pounds of jalapeno cheese summer salami and 10 pounds of slim jims.

And if you libs push us conservatives just a little farther, we will show no mercy when the civil war starts.

I feel certain all these jerks dancing on the hunter’s grave are vegans, they are wearing no leather, refuse to sit in a leather chair, etc. If not, they are major league hypocrites.

That’s why we should hunt with Claymores.

Maybe one of these would be helpful!!!

Most states allow for carrying a side arm while rifle hunting.

Per Google, looks like Indiana is a shotgun, muzzeloader, bow and handgun state for deer. Must have tag for each weapon.

That said, I've hunted white tail deer for years, they can lay a long time after being shot. I've seen them get up 20 minutes after being shot with a 12ga slug. Also, you always want to walk up behind the deer laying on the ground. Don't want to approach the feet. Antlers aren't really too dangerous while the deer is down (assuming you are behind the head.) Until you get the jugular cut, you don't know what you have and they can be very dangerous.

As he sat there under the tree in the waning moments of life, I hope the hunter gave thought to his Savior and thanked Him for his life and looked forward to Heaven, or came to realize his need for one and accepted Jesus.

What's The Frequency? I didn't post an anti-hunting comment... I have hunted and dressed many an animal and raised and slaughtered even more. I am sorry for the hunter and his family as well as the numerous people who are killed by deer all over the country.

The last deer I took out happened to be with a rented minivan. It was a waste of good meat and it totaled the van. I was able to walk away, but many folks aren't that lucky.

This story inspires me to go out and get revenge on these 4 legged, tasty, killers. :-)

Unfortunately for him, no one ever taught him how to approach a downed deer and how to make sure it is dead.
