That is a tough one. Newt is by far, the most experienced and knowledgeable candidate in many years. As you point out, his past has as many wrinkles as Broom Hilda's face.

If it comes down to a dire emergency like the one we will soon have in the Middle East, then there is nobody better than Newt to handle it or than who knows precisely what action to take.

Has Newt seen the light? Has he turned over a new leaf and learned to listen to Conservative principles and traditional values? It's possible. He has repeatedly failed to do so all through his past? Absolutely. So picking him as our candidate will come as a great risk.

But with what this country is faced with in the coming years. It may be a risk we cannot afford not to take.

Interesting point.

However, as a corollary, we’re taking a risk with any of them at this point.

Newt does have to his benefit, an excellent 4 years or so as Speaker, and the orchestration of the takeover in the first place. When you consider what was accomplished, Newt has done more for the conservative movement since Reagan than anyone else in practice.

I’d almost rather have a guy who has done things in his private life I disagree with, but more or less governed the way I like, to someone with a pristine personal life who is an insufferable moderate/liberal legislatively.

It’s too bad we can’t have a guy with Romney’s family life, Newt’s brain and legislative record, Cain’s private sector experience, Marco Rubio’s youth and good looks as our nominee. However, we can’t.
