The “I cheated on my wives because I am so patriotic.” thing was disgusting, too.

Agreed. If you screw over your wife, you'll screw over anybody.

You hit the nail expertly on the head. I couldn’t have said it better myself. The problem with most politicians is they want so much to be liked and the key flaw in far too many otherwise excellent conservatives is that have this absurd desire to be loved by the media which is predominantly liberal. Conservatives win when they consistently leverage the public’s distrust of the media and the establishment of both parties. The liberals are the extremists, they may be educated but they aren’t even very smart, their ideas don’t work why would any conservative want to be loved by them?

I watched c-span’s 1994 vote for Newt for speaker. Back then, it was exciting for us poli-geeks. We have his history lectures, he’s brilliant. He has no modern political sense. The Couch was my final nail in his political coffin. If he was as smart as they say, he should have glommed onto the tea party. He’s just another establishment republican.

I don’t have a preferred candidate, leaning for Cain, Perry or Bachmann. But, we’ll see how it all comes out of the washer.

The couch happened during the 2008 election. The Contract with America was 17 years ago. What did Newt do in 1980?

It does appear that Newt has gone liberal since his speaker position, doesn’t it? Why? IMO, the older you get the more conservative you become. But, he appears to becoming more liberal. It’s really a shame the machine got to him. He’s such a strong opinionist on conservative values. I can’t imagine throwing away my core beliefs.
