My wife is an RN who worked in a geriatric ward for 6 years. While its true they weren’t all post-surgical patients, most of those who died did so because of anything but post-op infections—Cancer, renal failure, etc.—and if it wasn’t cancer or some other chronic disease it was almost always it was the body giving out in some way.
Most elderly people die of things that would have been called “old age” on the death certificate 50 years ago.
