is facebook for women and effeminate men?

Posted on 10/21/2011 10:07:09 PM PDT by mamelukesabre

When I first got pushed into signing up for facebook 3 years ago, I thought it would be a waste of my time. after a month or two, I decided it was kinda fun. Then I started hearing bad things and started worrying about security and my use of it tapered off. Now, 3 years later, I don't look at my facebook much but when I do, I notice two things:

its almost purely women that put things on facebook and make comments on stuff.

its purely women that are sending me friend requests and I have no idea who they are.

Is facebook dying off, drying up, wasting away? Is it turning into a ladies book club or ladies cribbage club? If so, how long before the same thing happens to FR?

LOL. I like it found old friends from NY. My page is like FR #2 we all hate Obama. I have a few friends who have the need to post pictures of all their fancy cars and big homes but I don't care.

I'm using Internet since its early days, with Trumpet Winsock and PPP/SLIP and Linux 1.x. I guess I'm an early adopter - and an early unadopter too, if there is such a word.

ccmay:
Pooh. I used it long before DNS, let alone SLIP.

*chuckle* I had a BITNET address; A0S5000::UMASS -- store-and-forward overnight on dialup between mainframes.

But, then, I started in computing loading long trays of hollerith cards into cardreaders attached to room sized mainframes the can't measure up to a stripped-down cel phone. My, my; how things have changed...

“Zuckerberg deserves every penny.”

You people must watch a lot of “tv”. How else could anybody be so utterly clueless.

Zuckenberg has the morals of a barnyard animal and zero respect for any individual or constitutional rights.

ZERO.

“Zuck: Yeah so if you ever need info about anyone at Harvard

Zuck: Just ask.

Zuck: I have over 4,000 emails, pictures, addresses, SNS

[Redacted Friend’s Name]: What? How’d you manage that one?

Zuck: People just submitted it.

Zuck: I don’t know why.

Zuck: They “trust me”

Zuck: Dumb fucks.”

And that’s just a tiny sample of callous privacy invasion on a staggering scale.

If you use social media, learn how to protect your privacy, it’s nothing to joke about.

Facebook is for everyone and for no one. It is what you make of it, period. In the line of business I'm in (the interwebs), if you ignore Facebook, and the larger concept of social networking, you do so at your own peril.

Kind of like someone in the early part of the last century scoffing at that ol' radio or television stuff.

BTW, I’m not saying FB isn’t useful for many things, I use it for family and friends, just learn how to protect your data from being used by individuals or organizations who may not have good intentions.

For starters:

I love the car commercial where the “concerned” daughter is worrying that her parents are not “living” now that she has has moved away. The daughter jokes the parents have just a few “friends” on an implied FB-like program on their computer whereas she proudly has over 600 “friends” - and the daughter goes onto to claim that she is really living and her parents are not (even though they are are off really living life through owning one of the cars and being outdoors!). Classic.

If you're getting random friend requests, your privacy settings are too lax. I have mine set pretty tight so only friends of mine can see my profile.

I'm on fb all the time. It's great for personal and professional uses. I find it funny that most of the comments around here are from people who rarely, if ever, use the site. I call them the "Harrumph!" crowd.

If used correctly, Facebook is a vibrant area for contacts, information, and maintaining distance relationships. I get all the political postings, local events and businesses, have kept up with old classmates, and obtained customers for my business. I’ve kept in touch with a friend who is a private contractor in Afghanistan, helped out an old friend in KY who just needed someone to talk to, and made some new friends from Britain.

Facebook is the new neighborhood.

Oh, and I’m 51 years old.

“Given that almost all of my Soldiers from my old Infantry Platoon, some of whom are now Special Forces and company First Sergeants, are on Facebook, no, it’s not for “effeminate men.”

Absolutely! I keep up with several of my old Navy buddies from 40 years ago when we were shipmates. I also get lots of news feeds from all the conservative websites. They all have Facebook feeds. Lots of good videos, and I can make comments to all of my representatives on their links. I like that I can keep up with all my relatives birthdays too.

Disagree. I am a lady, and have a lot of FB friends who are straight, strong, conservative men. They’re my friends either because they’re hunters, horsemen, ex-military, coreligionists, and/or we are working together toward conservative political ends. This is the MOST valuable resource for networking with fellow conservatives and coordinating our efforts! Though FB is run by liberals and tries to make things difficult for conservatives, it’s still a great tool to meet and organize.

BTW, I may use FB for some personal ends—that is, to announce life events, brag on my kids, or ask for opinions—but those posts are sent -only- to my close friends and my family. FB is now arranged so that you can allow posts only to be seen by certain groups of people. This keeps me from boring or annoying one group of friends with posts about subjects that are of interest only to another group. It’s efficient.

My wife and her daughters are deep into the Facebook thing. I have absolutely no interest, and have never put anything on it. Or Twitter for that matter. I don’t if it’s just another way for women in general or men of a certain sexual predilection to gossip (donning my flame-retardant suit) or not.

Good post, and while we're skewing Facebook, how about most electronic conversations in general? Have you ever wondered what all the people with a cellphone glued to their ears are talking about as they're turning the corner or driving past you while you're stopped at a traffic light? Are they telling the person on the other end something vitally important, or are they just telling the person they're turning the corner near the mall?

I'm convinced most people use these devices just to use them with no great need beyond their need to talk to someone about anything. To be sure, I have a cellphone, and I use it occasionally, but I've never turned a corner driving a car with one stuck to my ear. It's crazy.
