I abhor these social networking sites.
It’s like one big contest to see who can have the most “friends”

One woman told me she had 248 “friends”

I told her you have 5 or 6 friends at the most and that you haven’t seen or talked to the other 240+ since High School or the job you had 12 years ago...

Then there are those who can’t spell, capitalize and punctuate worth a damn. Go back to school!

You must be referring to half the posts of this forum.

You’d do better just sitting in your living room with your dog, enjoying the silence and peace.

Now there's a radical concept. No TV, no radio, no internet, no newspaper, no chatty neighbors. Just silence and a softly snoring dog. I'm going to try it--substituting my cat.

I feel fortunate that I avoided the Facebook trap. One of the reasons I did was because I didn't want to have to ignore friend requests from people I either don't know--or do know and wish I didn't.

I look at Facebook often. My family is spread all over the country and there are new babies and other family news there every day. I have few “friends” and send out an original post less than once a week, but I feel I have gotten to know several family members better, and have reconnected with a couple of old friends from college and highschool.

I have un-friended some people whose private business I did not care to know any more. But mostly there has only been upside, as I have gotten to know the young adults in my family better, as well as some of the retirees.

One is only afraid of silence if they either need constant stimulation, or they care that others will think they don’t have enough going on in their life if they can afford the time to just sit.

I love music and DVDs and books, but silence is a luxury, and it is very energizing. Just turn out the light, and sit and don’t try to force thoughts to go this way and that, just kind of let ‘em happen. You’ll be surprised what comes along.

A variation involves music. I am a music lover, but I am like everyone else in that music is in the background while something else is going on, talking, reading, writing. Just sitting and listening—again, it is a real treat.

But the silence is like a tonic for the mind and spirit.

That’s good that you can use Facebook instead of letting it fill your time. This seems to happen with younger people in particular, in my experience.

As with all things, if you can control it instead of letting be just another thing cluttering your life, that’s great. For me, and my life and my relationships, it’s just useless.

I enjoy Facebook. Like any other place on the web, there are good things and bad things about the place. I guess much of the value is in how you choose your friends.

For some things online one seems to need a FB account, so I made one. I think I used my dogs information or some such. FB tracks too much, so I avoid it as much as possible.

I think FB can be a good tool to help extended family to stay in touch.

I look at lamebook.com sometimes, when I'm not wanting to think about politics. Some of it is crude but some of it is pretty funny. They gather the goofy stuff from FB. ->

Might have something to do with the content of your friend list.

“I’m educating many people on conservative issues, and about Herman Cain, too.”

Me too. For that, Facebook is invaluable, and people shouldn’t knock it.

Ninety percent of the activity on Facebook is people posting pictures of themselves, and ninety percent of that is women. So .... yes.

I like Facebook - I do not understand Twitter. Facebook is basically an aggregator of gossip, I suppose, with pictures, but I have met some old high school friends and former coworkers. Some of us pray for each other’s intentions, some share health woes, some post brag pics of the kids, etc. But Facebook is on the decline.
