Back in the day (60’s), I played for a major university as a center. We were cautioned by the coach not to celebrate in any way when we got a TD. First of all, they might be encouraged by our display and come on strong as a result, second, they could come back in the next set of plays and score ... embarrassment would ensue. Of course that was back in the day of civility.

Of course what the fans did ... well that was their business.

Ditto to what you said...the only time I slipped up and did any type of celebration was on my first intercept, in an NFL preseason game, as a 3rd string rookie f.a. LB, and I refused to give the ball back to the ref...after 3 tons of humanity had just landed on me. I swear people were coming out of the stands just to pile on. Nowadays, they act like the simple act of tackling a running back in the 1st quarter had just won the game.
