RE: Could someone explain what a song’s “hook” is to me please. I’ve heard the term before, but don’t really understand it. Thanks.

A hook is a musical idea, often a short riff, passage, or phrase, that is used in popular music to make a song appealing and to “catch the ear of the listener”.

It’s a lyrical line or melodic phrase that makes the song memorable.

The term generally applies to popular music, especially rock music, hip hop, dance music, and pop. In these genres, the hook is often found in, or consists of, the chorus.

Here are some examples:

I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston -
“And I will always love you
I will always love you”

You’re Beautiful by James Blunt
“You’re beautiful, you’re beautiful
You’re beautiful it’s true”

Ultimate "hook" of all time - LET'S GO by the Routers. This hook is used as a sports cheer, and it seems as though its origin is almost lost to memory. Note the youtube link I found is Japanese! ( The katakana says "re tsu go" )
