I had a pop-up that wouldn’t go away. McCaffey kept telling me that my scans were clean & I didn’t have a virus. I found Malware Bytes on the internet, had to go into safe mode to run a thorough scan - it took hours - but it did find a virus & I was able to delete it - no more pop-up. It was also free.

I no longer use McCaffey - and my computer runs so much faster now.

I agree with your decision to not use McAfee. Malwarebytes is a great scan tool to use when you suspect you have malware. However, the free version only scans and doesn't have any sort of "real time" protection to prevent malware in the first place.

I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials as basic antivirus protection for windows based computers. It is free and generally noninvasive. It is far from perfect, as I've seen some malware able to sneak around it, but it does provide some level of protection and knows windows as well as it can since it was written and is maintained by Microsoft.
