My parents had one of those installed, but with a plastic drawer, when they got new cabinets in 1991.
They kept small screwdrivers and other tools in it that were handy around the house. I can’t imagine my mom putting a wet sponge in there with little air circulation. It would’ve given her the heebie-jeebies.

See, it’s not just me. I have one of these little drawers too. But I don’t like putting the wet sponge in there.
So, I dry out the sponge, then put it in there, then have to take it out and wet it soon enough!
But, I can fit the stopper in there, so that’s good.
I like your folks’ idea of putting some little tools in there, maybe I’ll try that.
