It took two hours for Rick Perry to crash and fall out of contention. If im Sarah, I am sitting up in Alaska and chilling for alittle awhile longer. I was one of those people pushing her to get in right away. I think I have changed my opinion.
heck, the nomination in not even decided offically until the Republican Convention next summer.
“...the nomination in not even decided offically until the Republican Convention next summer.”
Actually, no, that’s what the caucuses and primaries are about, selecting convention delegates on behalf of the various candidates. Once a candidate has the necessary number of delegates, it is over. One could argue that a mass of delegates who started off committed to Romney/Perry/Cain/Bachmann/whomever could switch their allegiance, but that scenario is more than highly unlikely.
In ‘08 it was all but over after Florida. There was no question after that primary that the the nominee was going to be McCain. A few who were already on the Super Tuesday ballot were on the ballot, but effectively not, and then dropped out. Huckabee hung in for his own purposes, maybe hoping McCain would drop dead? Who knows? But there was no way after Florida in ‘08 that anyone else but McCain was going to win it. In ‘00 it was pretty much over in SC when W bested McCain. So these early caucuses and primaries are very, very important. The filing deadline for FL is 10/31, and for SC it’s 11/1.
I wouldn’t be quite so quick to write off Perry, either. His gratuitous remark and some of his non-conservative positions are definitely going to be difficult to overcome, no doubt about that. Campaigns have imploded for less, and survived worse. Time will tell. It’s going to be a fun ride till the eventual nominee is chosen.
