Can Charlie's Angels escape the remake curse?
The WEEK ^ | sept 22, 2011 | no clue

Posted on 09/23/2011 12:01:58 AM PDT by max americana

Despite the wretched fates of recent Knight Rider and Bionic Woman remakes, tenacious TV execs keep attempting to revamp old shows for a millennial audience. In Charlie's Angels, the latest rebirth (premiering Thursday at 10 p.m. on ABC), actresses Minka Kelly, Rachel Taylor, and Annie Ilonzeh step into the butt-kicking, private-investigator shoes of Farrah Fawcett and Co. By most accounts, it doesn't go well:

Critics are already proclaiming the straightforward series "offensively bland" and "DOA (dumb on arrival)." Is Charlie's Angels doomed to suffer the TV remake curse?

Yep. Especially with writing this bad: The new crimefighting trio is burdened by "comically bad writing," says David Hinckley at the New York Daily News. When a perceptive kidnap victim remarks, "You don't look like cops," the girls respond: "We're not. We're Angels." This stiffly delivered repartee is better suited for a "dialogue balloon in a comic book" than a primetime series. "Charlie's Angels"

I dunno. Drew Barrymore is producer and keeps milking this dead cow so it will end up like Knut Rider. Minka Kelly is hot though. Hope they have a swimsuit episode before it gets canceled.

I don’t watch TV so I had no idea who this Minka Kelly person is, so I checked...

Thanks for the thread! :) I hope this show stays on forever!

This looks like a winner to me. There is always a mute button to fall back on if the dialog is crap.

They don’t have the assertive power of the original trio. I think the originals just realized they were making something silly and just went with it. They were beautiful and attractive and seemed like they could handle themselves in those situations.

These three look like drunk girls wandering off the Sex and the City set.

Farrah Fawcett got all the attention in the original show, but I always thought Jacklyn Smith was the real knockout.

From left - right:

Mid-20s sassy black girl w/a socially acceptable 'fro
younger thinner "Drew Barrymore-like" clone blonde
"Cameron Diaz-like" clone brunette.

Destined for direct to DVD and then obscurity.
(great looking teeth though)

I am so burned out on remakes. All of Hollywood’s writers need to be fired.

I thought Hollyweird was supposed to be so creative. What is holding them back now that Barry the ZerO-bama their pagan god has assumed power.

Are their any creative minds left in Hollywood or did all the pot do them in? They can’t seem to do anything but remakes or realityTV.

They look good but they don’t compare to the stunning originals.

Larry David is creative and funny. I like “House M.D.” and think Hugh Laurie is a genius.

Can Charlie's Angels escape the remake curse?

I sure hope not! I am so sick of remakes. It's disgusting. Between remakes and "reality" tv, I sometimes surprise myself when I don't burn Hollywood to the ground.

...If only they could get Kurt Sutter to write it, but no. He’s the anti-network king of cable dramas.

What choice did we have back in the 70's?

Bad TV, or bad movie theaters?

Nowadays if it blows, no one knows, cause they have other things to do.
