This is a bogus story. These three idiots were authorized to hunt black bears and, “accidentally” shot a grizzly. The only self defense was on the part of the grizzly. It’s just a shame a noble creature had to die, as well.

not a bogus story...the hunters studied the bear for several minutes and could not see any resemblance to a grizzly bear....not all "black" bears are black....many are chocolate brown, similar to grizzlies...
so being ethical hunters, they waited a while then started tracking the bear after wounding it....the grizzly then charged and had to be put down the rest of the way...
its easy to make a mistake in the woods....half the people in the country would call a bull elk a moose any day of the week....
these guys were not road hunters or using atv's ....they hiked a considerable distance to a very remove area and as I understand it, one of them was a professional guide and at least two of them hunted that area before....
my own beloved is somewhere in the Hells canyon area with a bow looking to find a prime elk so this story hits home for me....

Here’s the point. If you’re a hunter and you decide to go after black bears, or grizzlies, or elk or bunny rabbits- and the animal wins- well, that’s tough sh!t. If you expect the animal to roll over and give up- you ain’t much of a man or a hunter.

I think black bear is the ONLY game animal not to resurface in Texas. Used to be prime quarry in Civil War times, for their fat used in frying.

They are found[rare] in East Texas. I've seen some mounts of them taken by poachers at some of the Gane Warden displays.

The bear, by far. He was out manned, he was outgunned, but he still went down fighting and took one of the hunters with him. The family of this hunter should be honored their loved one was beaten by a superior foe.

Seems like black bear are mainly fish eaters (and berries and honey) that need rivers and creeks that don’t run dry like they do here in Centex.
Funny things that scare some and not other people. I wouldn’t be bothered if my daughter ran across a black bear, but we found an alligator (actually a Caiman, 5 ft long, a pet) and she was banned from the lake! (Travis). :)
