Native New England cottontail rabbits disappearing

CONWAY, Mass (Reuters) - The New England cottontail rabbit, in sharp decline for decades throughout the Northeast, is on the verge of disappearing from several states, with the reason somewhat a mystery, wildlife experts say.

The once prolific breeder, already no longer found in Vermont, has nearly vanished from Rhode Island and New Hampshire and exists in only negligible populations in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine and New York, according to biologists and U.S. officials.

The New England native apparently has been supplanted by a look-alike competitor -- the abundant eastern cottontail, of which more than 200,000 were introduced locally in the early 1900s for hunters, a Rhode Island study found this week.

>

A possible cause is predators including coyotes and bobcats returning in large numbers, lured by plentiful eastern cottontail for them to feed on, said Husband in a statement.

Look in the stew pot.

Coyotes

And hawks. Both the coyotes and hawks hunt in Boston.

I had never seen a rabbit here in VT until about 10 years ago. Now they are prolific.

Whichever breed they are my kid loves seeing them.

Has logging pretty much stopped in New England since the 60s?

Thanks for the illustration. It’s like one of those “spot the differences” picture puzzles. I wonder how they differentiated in the first place.

I was slightly wrong. I looked it up and its the lack of fatty acids instead of proteins that gets you. This causes uric acid and ammonia compounds to build up to potentially fatal levels. I don’t know how to post a link, but this might ge you there: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabbit_starvation

They're all in my backyard and the cornfield adjacent !

They seem to like it here, which is good, as having them out there keeps 'em handy til needed.
Meanwhile, freezer space is available for other things.

Where there's food, there's rodents.

Turnabout is fair play. ;-)

Thank you very much. Excellent link. Stefansson is one of those who showed that eating a virtually complete animal diet can be healthy. So, lack of fat is the big problem. Rabbits are too lean.

I saw something similar in the Mormon march to Arizona. They ended up eating their horses, but the horses were so worn out that there was no fat on them, so they got very little satisfaction from eating the horseflesh.
