“I know it sounds funny ... but it was horrifying.”

That would scare the heck out of me.

I actually had someone come through my apt. once, not an invasion, but they climbed through an open window, stole my purse and departed. It was me and my little daughter who lived there, she was sleeping in my bed and luckily the thief was only a thief and went right by us.

I never slept another night in that place.

Very, extremely, scary.

What can one say: oh thank you Mr. Thief for not being a murderer, rapist, kidnapper?

Well, I do say thank you for that.

And that is pretty sad.

I live in fairly safe areas, but I still keep a handgun loaded and ready to go within arms reach of where I sleep, and at least one more somewhere in the bedroom ready to go. I also keep a 12 gauge shotgun in the closet loaded (#6) but none in the chamber (weapon of choice). If I get to that and the sound of it being charged isn't enough to send a thief/rapist/murderer sprinting, then they deserve what they get, no questions asked.

Yes, #6's at close range will mess one up...

I assume you now pack heat? If not, I would make it a point to purchase a firearm for home protection.

"Better to be tried by twelve than carried by six."

I know what you mean. It's frightening and unnerving to have some stranger invade your home. I haven't had your experience, but I did come home to find my house had been burgled... And opened the door only to hear a "thump" from somewhere that I presume was the burglar leaving. It was really quite scary. I immediately retrieved my .357 and cleared the house while I was on the phone with 911.
