What you fail to understand is that the Debt has us.
As interest rates move up, as little as 80 basis points, our interest expense almost doubles to over $600 Billion a year, as it continues to go up the amount of money we have to pay expands exponentially until every dollar going in is used to pay interest on the debt.
So you see we will default way before then.
It is mathematically too late to do much. You either are looking at drastic reductions, elimination of all entitlements except SS or nothing at all.
The time to make these changes was about 30 years ago.
At this point no much to be done except prepare for the worst. None of these politicians have a clue, the corruption of both parties has put us where we are.
Again how do you get around the Demographics, you act as if that is a minor matter. Now if our population was 600 million or more we might be able to transition into a new plan that will work but that isn't going to happen either.

You are engaged in a futile discussion with people who love their “mailbox money”. SS is like a horse with three legs with compound fractures; the kindest thing to do would be to put it out of its misery. Nevertheless, there are people who like getting checks and will grasp at anything to try to keep them coming.
