Serena Williams Lets Loose on Umpire Again, Loses to Samantha Stosur in 2011 US Open Final

Serena Williams + US Open = drama!

It wasn’t quite Serena’s [####] material, but the former world No. 1 brought the drama to Arthur Ashe Stadium once again in the women’s final of the 2011 US Open during a surprising loss to Australian Samantha Stosur on Sunday.

After losing the first set 6-2, Williams unraveled early in the second when she was docked a point for yelling “Come on!” after hitting what she thought was a winner, but was a ball that Stosur got a racquet on. Applying the ITF “hindrance” rule, the chair umpire let Serena know that she had lost the point. Taking the point penalty as a person attack, Serena then lost it.

“Aren’t you the one who screwed me over last time?” Williams directed her anger toward the chair umpire Eva Asdaraki. “You have it out for me? I promise you, that’s not cool. That is totally not cool.”

During the changeover Williams amped-up her vitriol at Asdaraki.

“If you ever see me walking down the hall, look the other way,” Williams said. “Because you’re out of control, you’re out of control. You’re not only out of control, you’re a hater, and you’re just unattractive inside. Who would do such a thing? And I never complain. Wow!…A code violation because I expressed who I am? We’re in America right now!…Don’t even look at me! I promise you, don’t look at me, ’cause I am not a [inaudible]. Don’t. Look. My. Way.”

Williams went on to lose the match 6-2, 6-3 to Stosur, one of the few players who can out-power the younger Williams.

Afterward in her press conference, much like two years ago when she threatened to force-feed a ball to a linesperson who called her for a foot fault, Williams feigned memory loss about the incident.

“I don’t even remember what I said,” she said. “It was just so intense out there. It’s the final for me. I guess I’ll see it on YouTube. I was just in the zone. I think everyone, when they play, they kind of zone out kind of thing. I don’t know, I’ll see it later I’m sure.”

While the point penalty gave Stosur the break to start the second set, Williams broke back immediately, but could not sustain her fire.

“I tried to get more fired-up and kind of get more like into it and kind of just get more Serena-esque and into the match and get going and stuff like that,” she said.

Lost in the ugliness was the first Slam win for Stosur, who became the first Australian woman to win a Slam since Evonne Goolagong Cawley at Wimbledon in 1980.

“I can’t actually believe I won this tournament,” the 27-year-old Stosur said. “To go out there and play the way I did is obviously just an unbelievable feeling.”

On bouncing back after Serena’s tirade, the Aussie said, “For sure, it was difficult to stay focused, and then obviously the crowd got heavily involved. You know it was probably the loudest I ever felt a crowd in my whole entire life. It was definitely an overwhelming feeling. But once I hit that next ball in the court and started playing again, I felt settled.”

When a black tennis player comes unglued, they are uppity and full of rage. When you're a black female playing singles tennis, you are the HNIC. Combine that with media scrutiny and their handfuls of salt to rub into your blisters, and it's a lose-lose.

Her accomplishments on and off the court will be judged in greater context some day. I can wait. She's not that vital to our society that we need to understand her in total today or next year.

I’m sorry, but to let these sisters play with the ladies seems to be a bit much to me. They seem to have taken enough steroids to beat most men.

I agree she’s just an accomplished athlete. Somehow I didn’t see the same outrage from people about Ryan Harrison’s racket throwing and ball kicking in his 1st round loss. Although he is not on the same level as Serena, bad behavior is bad behavior. By the way Ryan Harrison, 19 yrs old, is considered a promising up-and-coming junior player.

Jimmy the Greek's observations regarding athleticism in the black race were not incorrect, just inappropriate to voice.

Black don't crack or wrinkle. It's also why they don't swim very well. Muscle is denser than other tissue.

Serena is a healthy body image IMHO. A lot better than BAWG's (boney a$$ed white girls) that our society values so dearly.

Women like Serena and Queen Latiffa are a threat to Katie Courics who are more comfortable interviewing Ashley Olsen on her feelings about eating a tuna sandwich than getting some real uncomfortable biatch slapping from real women.

Almost everybody! Really, can you honestly say that she is a woman playing against other women? Can you at least ask for more stringent testing?

Black women in very good shape, swinging a tennis raquette at full force and in a sweat will tend to look like that. If you played professional tennis for three to six hours a day and consumed a 7,000 calorie a day diet while doing so, you'd pack on the muscle like the incredible hulk too.

She is all woman and no man juice. Her body mass distribution supports that she's just the right balance of what she's got. People said the same thing about Flo-Jo too.

Let's not focus on her appearance, but where she may be in a decade to be a leader in society. Powerful black women shouldn't be restricted to the likes of Maxine Waters or Shiela Jackson Lee.

Ha!

The Williams sisters have been coddled by the media for over a decade! HNIC? Salt in the wounds by the media? Get a grip! These two sisters don’t have that kind of “skin in the game”!

She is a sore loser!. Color of the skin doesn’t care about sportsmanship.

“Don’t even look my way”! ? What the hell was she going to do about it? Whip up on the “whitey” official?

Your kind of comments will only continue when people let you get away with it!

I call BS blackdog!

Sitting tennis players at the base of the umpire's bench is like sitting the ex wife next to your new girlfriend. Civility will fall to emotion every time.

Much of the traditions of tennis are based on manners and ettiquette. Both of those are quite boring to a television screen. The media loves Serena for just the reason that she makes people talk wen her manners become a casualty to professional sport.

When you have a job pulling down $40,000,000 and some obstacle jumps in your way, your responses may not be so measured either.

Etiquette is not judged, it's just etiquette or lack thereof.

The only folks in love with the Williams’ sisters are the media. The young female guns I know in tennis aren't trying to emulate anything from those two except not worrying about their weight and staying fit. The last two vocal tirade episodes from Serena were telling! She's a sore loser and feels entitled. Not surprising after all these years of media fawning. Serena honey, you ain't all that! Get a grip and play better next time. Your BS intimidation tactics aren't working.

Williams is already on probation for all of 2010 and 2011 , being forced by the the WTA to keep her emotions in check. So what will the WTA do to her now after her outburst today?

I’ll call BS on you too. This is a no-class individual. Threatened to force a ball down a lineperson’s throat 2 years ago in the US Open. Tennis is in enough trouble, it certainly doesn’t need this kind of classless behavior. And for the record, McEnroe’s tirades were classless also, it was embarrasing to watch him do that.

She should have forfeited the match after her outburst of demeaning words she said to the ump after she sat down! What a loser!

I see her as someone who might be using steroids thus full of rage. Let’s be honest, no way of knowing for sure unless giving her a drug test.

Tennis however used to be a gentleman’s (or gentlewoman’s) sport. The word “heck” was not even used on the court. Thank McEnroe for changing all this. There are those who still view it as such. Wanna see fights? Then go to a hockey game. Fans want to see the players act civilized at Tennis.
