The viewing public might be split on Chaz Bono's participation on the upcoming season of "Dancing With the Stars," but the way he sees it, his inclusion on the show is just what the doctor ordered for this country.
Reacting to the criticism he's faced sine the Season 13 cast was announced last week, Bono told ABC News, "It's made me realize I'm really glad I'm doing this, because America really needs to see this."
The 42-year-old only child of Cher and Sonny Bono added, "You know, it just kind of shows why for me it's important to be on the show, because so little still is known about what it means to be transgender. And there's so many just completely inaccurate stereotypes and thoughts that people have."
Bono, who was born Chastity Bono and underwent gender-reassignment surgery last year, ignited passions among "Dancing With the Stars" fans on Monday with the announcement that he'd be competing on the series. Many of the show's faithful expressed their displeasure over the choice on the series' message board.
"When I heard that Chaz Bono was going to be on, I was sick," went one typical anti-Bono tirade. "Not that I have anything personally again her/him, I just don't want that lifestyle choice continually flaunted in the media esp ABC."

She was a beautiful little girl. Her adolescent and adult years were self-hating and that was an ugly thing. Now she’s only mutilated herself and gone over the edge. Have a little pity on her for the sick world she grew up in and the insane choices she has made. She’s lost - plain and simple.

That is true. Her chromosomes will always say she is a female. I’m not aware that you can change your DNA to alter your core genetic information.
I wonder if she/he would have had this need to transform if she/he were not raised in the cesspool of show business. She/he is not a performer her/himself, so it is not an issue of creative people being “different.” Very rarely do you see this sort of thing among the “general population.”
I never liked seeing her on the Sonny and Cher Show, because she always seemed so sad. Just seeing her made me wonder what was going on in her life to make her so sad. Something happened to that little girl, and it wasn’t good.
Wow. That this is even possible .... not to mention promoted.... shows that America has really “jumped te shark”.
In some ways, Chaz Bono is a metaphor for how badly America has gone off the rails.
Maybe they should have a dancing show with all the participants having severe mental illnesses.
The “help” you say Chaz Bono needs will never, in this day and age, be given to her because the psychiatric community no longer considers these sexual aberrations a problem. Quite the contrary, that community would never dare declare homosexuality and all that transgender abominations a mental health issue.
I believe that male children need male names and female children need female names.
