Y'know, Jerry Lewis is an old man, 85 years old, not very sharp mentally any more, and maybe the MD people decided it was time for him to hang it up. So what's the big deal? They may be doing him a kindness. OK, but at least they should still have the telethon be the traditional length (21 hours or whatever) instead of compressed to 6 hrs. What a copout...

In recent decades, the event's appeal faded with younger viewers who found the format somewhat dated. Indeed, the telethon model itself as a fundraising vehicle lost much of its force, particularly with the rise of the Internet, which emerged as a more potent generator of donations. It would be difficult in this day and age to have an entertainment lineup that would keep people tuned in for a full day.
